Job Description

UF Health is seeking a Perioperative Clinical Education Specialist (RN) to support staff development within our surgical services. In this role, you will assess learning needs, design and deliver perioperative education programs, onboard and mentor new team members, and support ongoing clinical competency. You will collaborate with nursing leaders, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams to promote evidence-based practice and patient safety. Ideal candidates are experienced periop RNs with strong teaching, communication, and leadership skills who are passionate about advancing practice and supporting professional growth. Responsibilities Serve as the clinical education resource for perioperative nursing across UF Health's surgical services, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-anesthesia care areas. Design, implement, and evaluate orientation and ongoing education programs for perioperative RNs, surgical techs, and other team members, aligning with UF Health standards and regulatory requirements. Plan, coordinate, and facilitate classroom, skills lab, and in-unit education using evidence-based teaching strategies and adult learning principles. Lead and support competency assessment processes for perioperative staff, including development of checklists, skills validations, and return-demonstration evaluations. Collaborate with perioperative leadership, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interprofessional partners to identify learning needs and develop targeted education to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered surgical care. Integrate current evidence, AORN guidelines, and best practices into educational content, policies, and procedures for the perioperative environment. Support onboarding and transition-to-practice programs for new graduate nurses and nurses new to the perioperative setting, including preceptor development and mentorship. Organize and facilitate simulation-based training, mock codes, and scenario-based learning to enhance clinical judgment, teamwork, and patient safety in the OR and perioperative areas. Monitor clinical outcomes, quality indicators, and incident trends to identify educational opportunities and participate in quality and performance improvement initiatives. Provide just-in-time education at the point of care, coaching staff through new equipment, technologies, workflows, and documentation requirements in the EHR. Assist with preparation for regulatory and accreditation surveys by ensuring educational documentation, competencies, and staff training meet required standards. Support and model a culture of safety, inclusion, and continuous learning, encouraging staff participation in professional development, certification, and shared governance. Act as a role model for professional nursing practice, demonstrating advanced clinical skills, critical thinking, and effective communication in complex perioperative situations. Participate in the development and dissemination of educational materials, e-learning modules, and resources within the Education, Training & E-Learning department. Maintain own clinical competencies and professional knowledge through continuing education, participation in professional organizations, and engagement with current literature.
