Job Summary Assist the Clinical Pathology Laboratory Manager in the operation of the molecular genetics department. The Molecular Genetics Technologist should be experienced with molecular techniques, including PCR, hybridization, liquid handling, and genetic sequencing methods. Training periods are typically long and require reading of literature related to the specialty. Additionally, this position will assist the Molecular Pathology department in testing STI and respiratory specimens using the Hologic Panther system, as needed. This will require knowledge of techniques such as real-time PCR and transcription-mediated amplification to use this system efficiently.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

The listing of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded as the laboratory leadership deems necessary from time to time. ➢ Primary responsibilities include: Assists the Supervisor or Manager in the day-to-day operation of the Molecular Genetics lab on their assigned shift. Helps to ensure that all departmental functions are conducive to rendering accurate and quality results. Capable of performing all the duties/responsibilities of a Molecular Genetics Technologist without supervision. Under minimal supervision, perform bench work as needed to ensure timely completion of departmental work to meet established service goals, including proficiency testing. Consult with and/or make recommendations to the Supervisor or Manager concerning the operation of the department including policies, procedures, and equipment applications. Perform LIMS data entry, workflow development, testing and patient reporting. Maintain proper inventory levels of reagents, consumables, PPE and other items required to complete sample processing. Perform quality control, validation, and other quality activities to verify performance of clinical assays Maintains equipment by performing assigned maintenance activities and troubleshoot unexpected problems with equipment. Evaluate results to determine interference, inhibition, or other problems that arise. As directed by management, assist in the development, execution, and/or validation of new procedures. Assist management with departmental training, competency assessments, and continuing education. Ensure all corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards are met. Be knowledgeable of all applicable local, state, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations and with the Supervisor or manager, ensure departmental compliance Maintain a clean, well-organized, and safe work area.

Education:

Baccalaureate degree or higher in Medical Technology or Biological Science from a regionally accredited college/university ASCP Certification MT(ASCP) or MB(ASCP). AAB Certification MLS(AAB) or MLT(AAB)

Florida License:

Technologist in

Molecular Biology Experience:

Minimum of one year of molecular diagnostic testing experience. (Required) Minimum of one year of Next-Generation Sequencing experience. (Preferred)

Requirements:

Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test (ISHIHARA TEST) Successful completion of annual education units per state licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.

General Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Keeps patient confidentiality as indicated in the HIPAA compliance program. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff. Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions and recognize and correct hazardous conditions. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Skill in using computer programs and applications. Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral, and written instruction. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies Ability to identify and resolve problems. Equipment Computers, computer programs, scanners, Molecular Diagnostics equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Environmental Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Laboratory/Office work environment with exposure to various chemicals and equipment. Prolonged sitting, frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Safety equipment and personal protective equipment provided and required. Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate office and laboratory equipment. On call status after normal hours of operations. Laboratory Setting; exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazards, and sharp instruments.
