Full Time Day Shift 6:30am-3pmMonday-Friday Job Summary:
To assist the Cytology Department in the preparation of cytologic material for microscopic evaluation.Accountabilities :
- 1. Prepares and stains gyn and non-gyn cytology specimens.
- a. Follows procedures in Cytology Procedure Manual for cytopreparation of specimens.
- b. Assists in preparing and staining fine needle aspirations for immediate evaluation (EUS/EBUS)
- c. Makes appropriate decision on unusual specimens/circumstances based on the understanding of the theory and potential consequences (both when preparing specimens and staining).
- d. Follows procedures in Cytology Procedure Manual for routine, rapid Diff. Quik staining and cover slipping.
- e. Appropriately performs and documents daily filtering and weekly stain rotation.
- f. Able to prepare cytology specimen for additional testing according to testing facilities procedure.
- 2. To utilize the computer accurately.
- a. Follows established computer protocol as stated in the Computer Manual.
- b. Understands how to appropriately charge a specimen.
- c. Use and troubleshoot the slides and cassettes printer.
- d. Use Cerebro labeling system appropriately for slide and specimen labeling
- e. Able to order appropriate additional tests relating to cytology specimen.
- f. Correctly and legibly labels specimen containers.
- 3. Assists in maintaining Cytology instrumentation.
- a. Performs routine maintenance on appropriate Cytology instruments as stated in the Cytology Procedure Manuals.
- b. Able to operate assigned instruments in Cytology. Notifies responsible individuals when problems arise with the instruments.
- 4. Assists in the Cytotechnologist with additional designated functions
- a. Files pathology and cytology slides in correct numerical order.
- b. Able to retrieve slides and blocks for review or send-outs.
- c. Files requisitions in correct numerical order
- d. Assign and distribute cases to pathologists as needed
- e. Able to cover department in cytotechnologists absence.
- f. Performs daily documentation as assigned to by cytotechnologist
- g. Follows established protocols on the disposal of tissues and fixatives.
- h. Ensures cytology supplies are stocked. Notifies appropriate individuals when inventory is low.
- 5. Promotes patient safety by compliance with Organizational/Departmental policies and procedures.
- a. Maintains confidentiality of customers and associates at all times.
- b. Timely completion of yearly competencies, mandatory job requirements (RAHE, Fire/Safety CE, BLS, background clearance, fingerprinting, etc.) and continuing education.
- c. Keeps abreast of changes and exhibits a supportive professional attitude.
- d. Keeps abreast of and complies with contents in Laboratory Manual, DH Associate Manual, Infection Control Manual, Chemical/Safety Manual, Computer and each Departmental policy and procedure manuals.
- e. Associate is able to admit errors and accepts responsibility for actions.
- f. Associate assists in training/orientation of lab associates and students.
- g. Associate participates in proficiency testing.
- h. Associate has knowledge of Performance Improvement initiatives.
- i. Associate complies with dress code of department.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
