POSITION SUMMARY

The College of Dental Medicine, California Northstate University (CDM CNU) is seeking a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP). The RDHAP o and will work in the Community Outreach Program with an emphasis on providing dental desensitization and care for people with developmental disabilities. The RDHAP participates in onsite patient care in community settings like schools, preschools, rural communities, and residential facilities. The RDHAP collaborates with participating dentists/dental faculty to provide diagnostic, preventive, and early intervention treatment in the community and then supports referral and follow-up activities.

RESPONSIBLITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Work with the Community Outreach Team and Dr. Paul Glassman, program consultant, to develop and maintain program documentation including workflows, forms and tracking mechanisms.
• Develop relationships with educational, social and general health systems such as Head Start preschools, schools, long term care facilities and the like.

Collaborate with site staff and a Dental Assistant/Navigator (DA/N) to obtain patient consent, make arrangements to provide services on-site and provide those services through a collaborative oral health system. Participate in initial and on-going training to learn how to use the software, equipment, and the project collaboration system. Work with and train dental students from California Northstate University who are participating in community outreach activities. Collect electronic dental records including history, digital radiographs, photographs, and charting of dental findings. Work with the program DA/N and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to plan and carry out individualized dental desensitization activities. Collaborate with a dentist/faculty who will determine a plan for dental care for each patient in the program. Carry out those aspects of the plan that can be performed in the community setting including: Health promotion and prevention education for patients, children, parents, teachers, and caregivers Dental disease risk assessments Preventive procedures such as application of fluoride varnish and other "medical model" prevention activities, dental prophylaxis, and periodontal scaling Placing Interim Therapeutic Restorations Tracking the individual's need for and compliance with recommendations for additional and follow-up dental services Work with the DA/N and others collaborating with site staff to refer and facilitate appointments in CNU Dental Clinic and other dental offices for those procedures that cannot be completed in the community setting and require the skills of a dentist. Work with the DA/N in maintaining portable equipment and complying with OSHA and infection control standards. Ensuring all program equipment and supplies are returned to and securely stored at CNU each day and are organized and prepared for the next use. Integrate support and education strategies to improve the oral health of patients and knowledge of prevention practices of patients, families, and caregivers. Attend and participate in staff meetings and other staff events. Participate in quality improvement activities. Provide leadership as a dental professional in a community setting.

FACULTY RESPONSIBLITIES

• Achieve independent competence with our various software platforms (e.g. Teledentix, Canvas, CAMS, axiUm, etc.) to efficiently perform work duties.
• Supervise and educate students in participation in Community Outreach activities. This may involve didactic curriculum development, and clinical supervision.
• Be responsible for the attendance of students' participation in Community Outreach activities reporting concerning behavior of as appropriate.
• Maintain an open-door policy for students in need of mentoring or counseling, referring students to the appropriate authority as needed.
• Participate in, evaluate, and report as necessary, incidents of student professionalism and patient care activities requiring escalation to appropriate leadership.
• Document areas of needed professional growth by confidentially reporting instances of student misconduct, refusal to comply with established protocol, lack of professionalism, and/or disregard for the faculty direction to appropriate authority.
• Work with the College of Dental Medicine leadership to resolve issues when deficits of professionalism are identified.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must hold a current Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) license.

• Current BLS or CPR certificate.

Must have experience using electronic health records. Must be proficient in the use of technology like email, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and webinar platforms. Must demonstrate effective communication and problem-solving skills. Prefer 5+ years' experience working with vulnerable populations in community-based primary care settings. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, not required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain professional composure and demeanor. Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously. Knowledge about enrolling patients in health plans in the county preferred, but not required. Ability to complete work assigned with limited supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Position requires standing during the majority of working hours, bending, and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds. Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens is anticipated. Personal protective equipment will be provided to reduce or eliminate exposure to routine or limited infectious agents. Hepatitis B Vaccine series completion is required. Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard, mouse, and telephone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision to drive, vision to walk, close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

• Position requires use of personal vehicle for travel to community sites including transporting portable equipment and supplies.
