Charles County Department of Health 4545 Crain Highway, White Plains, MD, 20695 Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Dental Hygienist to join the Charles County Health Department Dental Program. The ideal candidate will deliver exceptional patient care, conduct comprehensive dental cleanings, and contribute to the seamless operation ofour clinical workflow as a public health dental hygienist. This position requires a strong grasp of dental terminology, infection control protocols, and patient assessment techniques. The Registered Dental Hygienist will collaborate closely with the dental team to promote oral health and ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including HIPAA. Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems is preferred, as is experience in pediatric dentistry and four-handed dentistry practices. Responsibilities Conduct professional dental cleanings, including scaling and polishing teeth to eliminate plaque and tartar accumulation. Perform initial patient assessments, which encompass measuring vital signs and reviewing medical histories. Assist the dentist during procedures by employing chairside assisting techniques, ensuring the comfort and safety of patients. Capture and develop medical imaging, such as X-rays, while strictly adhering to aseptic techniques and infection control standards. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices and post-treatment care to promote optimal dental health. Maintain accurate documentation of patient records, treatment notes, and medical histories within electronic health record (EHR) systems. Review medical records for completeness and accuracy, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations regarding patient confidentiality. Support infection control protocols by sterilizing instruments and maintaining a sterile environment in accordance with OSHA standards. Collaborate with the dental team to enhance clinic efficiency through effective documentation review and dental coding. Provide dental screenings, dental sealants, fluoride varnish applications, and oral cancer screenings at offsite locations. Participate in outreach events. Qualifications Valid state licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist. Proven experience in general dentistry, with a focus on pediatric dentistry preferred. Proficiency in EHR systems and digital radiography. Strong understanding of dental terminology, anatomy, infection control procedures, and aseptic techniques. Familiarity with dental imaging techniques and vital signs monitoring. Excellent patient care skills, particularly in pediatric settings when applicable. Ability to conduct thorough documentation reviews and accurate dental coding. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality. Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred. This position is as a consultant (1099) and may be eligible for conversion to a permanent State of Maryland position in accordance with State personnel policies and subject to budgetary availability and required approvals.
