Job Summary:

The Dialysis Technician is responsible for providing safe, effective, and compassionate hemodialysis care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or authorized clinical supervisor. This role prepares and operates dialysis equipment, monitors patients throughout treatment, documents treatment parameters, responds to dialysis-related emergencies, and maintains compliance with established clinical, safety, and regulatory standards. The Dialysis Technician works closely with nursing and multidisciplinary teams to support quality patient care while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and patient dignity.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Dialysis Treatment:

Prepare dialysate according to established procedures, unit protocols, and the patient's prescription. Obtain and document pre- and post-dialysis vital signs, including weight and temperature. Assess the patient's dialysis access before treatment and perform access-related procedures according to established protocols and scope of practice. Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments in accordance with the patient's prescription and unit protocols. Calculate, measure, and adjust blood flow rates and other treatment parameters as directed. Administer anticoagulants according to the patient's prescription and established protocols. Adjust fluid removal rates, reposition patients, and administer Normal Saline as directed by the RN, ALP, physician order, or unit protocol. Continuously monitor patient vital signs, treatment response, and overall condition throughout dialysis. Communicate changes in patient condition, treatment concerns, and other clinical issues promptly to the RN or ALP. Reinforce patient education and treatment instructions under the direction of the RN. Communicate emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the appropriate clinical staff.

Patient Monitoring and Emergency Response:

Monitor patients and dialysis equipment throughout treatment and respond appropriately to alarms. Adjust treatment parameters within established protocols based on patient needs and clinical direction. Recognize and respond appropriately to dialysis-related complications, including hypotension, needle displacement or infiltration, clotting, blood leaks, and air embolism. Initiate emergency procedures, including CPR, in accordance with facility policy and applicable standards in the event of cardiac or respiratory arrest. Maintain close observation of vascular access sites and report abnormalities promptly. Under RN direction, monitor, document, and reinforce patient instruction regarding vascular access care.

Equipment Preparation and Maintenance:

Prepare and test dialysis machines and equipment before each treatment. Verify proper operation of monitors, alarms, conductivity, temperature, and other machine functions. Set monitors and alarms according to manufacturer instructions and facility protocols. Verify the absence of residual sterilants before patient use. Properly disinfect, sanitize, and maintain dialysis equipment following manufacturer guidelines and facility procedures. Dispose of used dialysis supplies and materials safely and appropriately. Ensure equipment and treatment areas are clean, safe, and ready for patient care.

Clinical Documentation and Laboratory Support:

Accurately document treatment parameters, patient observations, vital signs, and interventions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Complete dialysis flow sheets and required documentation to support accurate patient billing. Review laboratory results and physician orders as directed and communicate relevant findings to the RN or appropriate clinical staff. Collect fluid samples and other specimens as required, properly prepare them for testing, and arrange shipment according to established procedures. Perform basic clinical procedures within scope of practice, such as changing dressings or bandages.

Patient Support and Unit Operations:

Ensure patients have adequate supplies and assist with monitoring and maintaining inventory levels. Assist nursing staff with basic patient care and treatments, including hemodialysis therapy. Maintain professional communication and conduct when interacting with patients, families, coworkers, and members of the multidisciplinary team. Protect patient privacy and maintain strict confidentiality at all times. Participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, and cost-containment initiatives. Participate in individual and group projects as assigned by management. Comply with all agency policies and procedures and applicable state and federal regulations, including CMS, HIPAA, OSHA, and other governing requirements. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Dialysis-related licensure/certification as required by applicable state and federal regulations. Knowledge of hemodialysis procedures, dialysis equipment, vascular access care, and patient monitoring. Ability to accurately follow physician orders, patient prescriptions, and established clinical protocols. Strong observation, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition and dialysis-related emergencies. Ability to work effectively under the direction of an RN or authorized clinical supervisor. Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, professionalism, and quality care.
