A Dietitian or Nutritionist provides clients with advice on healthy eating, and helps to plan nutritional menus. Works with individuals who have specific dietary needs, such as hospital patients, or oversees food programs in schools, hospitals, and other large organizations. May work in a community setting or non-profit, governmental, or public health organization, offering nutritional advice to specific groups of people.
Registered Dietitian counsels and educates patients on healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes using motivational interviewing techniques and evidence-based guidelines with the goal to reach patient's goals and improve clinical outcomes.
Main Responsibilities/Functions:
Evaluate and assess patient health status through dietary and lifestyle reviews, create care plans, and provide consultations and education Educates, supports and advocates healthy lifestyle, self-management, medication management, and reducing overall health risks Develop management plans around nutrition, lifestyle, behavioral, wellness and culture Evaluate the nutritional status of patients by reviewing their most recent readings, lab values and medical history and provide nutrition principles, dietary plans, food selection, and food preparation Provide additional resources, including nutrition-based handouts, when needed Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to facilitate patient goals towards health behavior change Participate in interdisciplinary patient care as needed and communicate effectively with members of the healthcare team Other duties and projects as assigned
Qualifications:
Education:
Completion of Bachelor of Science or advanced degree from a university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) Completion of an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship program Current Registered Dietitian licensure with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Recent graduates can be hired as "Registered Dietitian eligible." As a condition of continued employment, the individual must pass the CDR Exam within six (6) months of hire
Experience:
No experience beyond dietetic internship necessary Continuing Education Units (CEU): All employees must meet continuing education requirements as specified by CDR RDs must complete 75 hours of CEU per 5-year registration cycle
