Job Description

The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. This position serves as a Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor/Registered Dietitian (RD) within a clinic/region providing services primarily for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and to other public health programs as needed. Maintenance of the RD credential and Louisiana licensure is required to perform the functions of work, per USDA federal program regulations. This position requires routine statewide duties, including fieldwork, inspections, or direct services that extend beyond the employee's domicile parish. These statewide responsibilities are an inherent and ongoing part of the job and may require frequent travel. Possession of a permanent Louisiana Dietitian/Nutritionist license plus three years of licensed experience in public health nutrition or dietetics in a clinical setting. Job Duties:
Supervises and provides technical guidance to Public Health Nutritionists, Health Educators, Nutrition Educators, and contract staff to ensure high-quality WIC program services. Conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments, determines nutritional risk, provides individualized counseling, and prescribes food packages for high-risk WIC participants in accordance with state and federal guidelines. Provides specialized case management by coordinating referrals to healthcare providers, community resources, and Office of Public Health programs to support the health of women, infants, and children. Oversees WIC clinical operations, including certification and recertification services, formula approvals, inventory management, and documentation within the Louisiana WIC Management Information System (LAWIN). Monitors quality assurance and quality improvement activities by reviewing nutrition assessments, clinic documentation, workflows, and service delivery to ensure compliance with program standards. Develops and delivers nutrition education, breastfeeding education, staff training, and community outreach initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles and increase participation in WIC services. Serves as a subject matter expert in maternal and child nutrition by interpreting program policies, mentoring staff and dietetic interns, and providing professional guidance on nutrition and breastfeeding best practices.
