The DSD is responsible for ensuring nursing staff are properly trained, competent, and compliant with all federal, state, and facility regulations while promoting excellence in resident care. In addition, the DSD will oversee CNA staffing schedules, assist with workforce planning, and support recruitment and retention efforts to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained to meet resident care needs and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate is a licensed nurse with strong leadership, organizational, scheduling, and teaching skills who is passionate about staff education, regulatory compliance, and quality outcomes. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesStaff Education & Development Plan, coordinate, and oversee all staff development and educational programs. Conduct new hire orientation for licensed nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and other clinical staff. Develop and implement ongoing in-service training programs. Ensure annual competencies and mandatory training requirements are completed. Provide education related to changes in regulations, policies, procedures, and clinical best practices. Maintain accurate training records and employee education files. Clinical Training & Competency Assess staff learning needs and develop educational plans to address identified gaps. Conduct skills validation and competency evaluations for nursing personnel. Provide coaching and mentorship to nursing staff to promote professional growth. Collaborate with the Director of Nursing and interdisciplinary team to improve clinical outcomes. Staffing & Scheduling Management Oversee and coordinate Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) schedules to ensure adequate staffing levels based on resident census, acuity, state staffing requirements, and facility needs. Monitor staffing patterns, attendance, overtime utilization, and scheduling efficiencies. Coordinate staffing adjustments for call-offs, leaves of absence, vacations, and census fluctuations. Collaborate with nursing leadership to ensure proper staffing coverage on all shifts. Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and retention initiatives for CNA staff. Ensure staffing practices support quality resident care and compliance with state and federal regulations. Regulatory Compliance Ensure facility compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to staff education and competency requirements. Assist in preparation for state surveys and regulatory audits. Monitor compliance with infection prevention, resident safety, and quality assurance initiatives. Educate staff on CMS guidelines, infection control standards, and facility policies. Quality Improvement Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities. Analyze trends and training needs based on incidents, audits, surveys, and quality indicators. Develop and implement corrective action education plans when needed. Support initiatives that improve resident care, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, and retention. Leadership Responsibilities Promote a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement. Serve as a resource and educator for clinical staff, residents, and families. Collaborate with facility leadership to develop workforce development strategies. Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts. Assist with maintaining positive employee relations and fostering a strong team environment. QualificationsRequired Current and unrestricted California Registered Nurse (RN) License or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) License . Current Director of Staff Development (DSD) Certificate required. Minimum one (1) year of experience as a Director of Staff Development, Staff Development Coordinator, Clinical Educator, Charge Nurse, Unit Manager, or similar leadership role in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Strong knowledge of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulations, CMS requirements, and skilled nursing operations. Experience conducting staff education, competency evaluations, and in-service training. Experience with staffing coordination and CNA scheduling preferred. Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and time-management skills. Preferred Two (2) or more years of Staff Development experience in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Experience with state survey preparation and QAPI programs. Experience training and mentoring CNAs, LVNs, and RNs.
