Job Description Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice was founded by community volunteers in 1983 as a nonprofit organization, and we are honored to be a leading provider of Hospice and Palliative care in South Central and Southeast Kansas. Having served more than 40,000 patients and family members, we are experts in specialized care designed to provide support to you and your loved ones during an advanced illness. Our team of professionals, including a medical director, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, and volunteers, work in coordination with the patient's physician to provide pain and symptom management, as well as social and spiritual support. Summary The Director of Nursing (DON), ICT Nursing provides overall leadership, direction, and accountability for ICT hospice nursing operations. This position is the leader in charge of the ICT Command Center and has final operational authority for daily staffing deployment, admissions, patient assignments, caseload distribution, coverage decisions, and real-time clinical coordination. The DON ensures safe, timely, compliant, and patient-centered care while developing staff, managing performance, and advancing clinical quality. Essential Function (Competencies)
- Direct all daily ICT nursing operations and maintain clear accountability for patient care, staffing, workflow, communication, and follow-through.
- Exercise final decision-making authority within the Command Center regarding nursing deployment, admission assignment, caseload balancing, coverage gaps, call-offs, urgent needs, and service continuity.
- Serve as the central operational leader - the clinical 'air traffic controller' - coordinating the RN Intake Coordinator, Intake Coordinator, Schedulers, RN Case Managers, triage/float staff, and other clinical resources.
- Assign and adjust admissions and visits based on geography, acuity, caseload, capacity, continuity, productivity, and patient need; resolve competing priorities and escalate material risks to the VP of Clinical Services.
- Maintain real-time awareness of referrals, pending admissions, daily schedules, staffing capacity, caseloads, missed or delayed visits, mileage/routing, and unresolved patient-care needs.
- Provide nursing leadership and clinical oversight consistent with the plan of care, interdisciplinary group decisions, physician orders, agency policy, Medicare hospice Conditions of Participation, and applicable federal and Kansas requirements.
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate ICT nursing staff; set expectations, address performance or conduct concerns promptly, support competency development, and partner with Human Resources on corrective action when needed.
- Ensure adequate staffing, orientation, education, competencies, scheduling practices, and on-call coverage; participate in recruitment, selection, retention, and workforce planning.
- Monitor nursing quality, documentation timeliness, productivity, visit utilization, medication and symptom-management practices, incident trends, infection control, and patient/family concerns; initiate corrective action and follow through to resolution.
- Lead nursing participation in QAPI, audits, complaint investigations, emergency preparedness, policy implementation, compliance monitoring, and survey readiness; implement plans of correction as assigned.
- Promote effective interdisciplinary communication and collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacy, quality, intake, social services, chaplaincy, business development, and other departments.
- Use staffing, census, acuity, productivity, quality, and service data to identify trends, allocate resources responsibly, and recommend operational improvements.
- Provide direct clinical support or field coverage when necessary to protect patient safety and continuity of care, within licensure and competency.
- Participate in administrative on-call or leadership coverage as assigned and perform other duties necessary to support safe and effective ICT nursing operations.
- Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Kansas or a qualifying multistate license.
- Bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred; equivalent relevant nursing leadership experience may be considered.
- Minimum five years of nursing experience, including at least two years in hospice, home health, post-acute care, or a comparable clinical setting; supervisory or management experience strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of Medicare hospice regulations, clinical documentation, quality oversight, and nursing standards of practice.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions under pressure, direct multiple workflows, hold staff accountable, communicate clearly, and manage competing priorities.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, scheduling/workforce systems, communication technology, and operational data.
