Job Description

FACILITY
THE
BEHAVIORAL CENTER OF MICHIGAN REPORTS TO
Chief Nursing Officer The Director of Nursing is responsible for quality patient care provided by the nursing departments in the Center. The Director of Nursing is responsible for orchestrating clinical care through the managers of the Center programs. The Director of Nursing facilities collaboration between clinical departments and the medical staff. He/she participates in administrative committee activities. The Director of Nursing is accountable for assuring compliance with all accrediting agency standards governing the delivery of patient care. The Director has oversight of facility-wide Performance Improvement activities for the purpose of monitoring standards of patient care and to take action to improve care of and maintain quality care. The Director of Nursing collaborates with the Center's Risk Manager to insure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff personnel.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides direction for nursing services under his/her supervision. Organizes, plans and directs the department functions and activities to comply with established policies and procedures to achieve long and short-term objectives. Maintains compliance with ANA standards of psychiatric mental health nursing practices and AHA standards of practice. Maintains a program of performance improvement and risk management. Makes Center rounds to assess and evaluate the quality of patient care and to identify problems and needs. Ensures a work environment that is conducive to the delivery of optimum patient care. Emphasizes the importance of safety, patient rights, and person-centered planning in all aspects of care. Coordinates and communicates with other administrative staff. Approves all nursing departmental policies and procedures. Delegates duties as needed to Nursing Management and Nursing Administrative Personnel. Maintains a performance appraisal process for Clinical managers and ensures all Nursing Management performs annual performance evaluations. Prepares an annual report and other interim reports as required for the CNO and the Board of Directors. Monitors and supports the Center's infection control programs. Serves on Center committees as required by the CNO and Medical Director.. Participates in staff development as needed. Actively participates in the recruitment and retention of qualified nursing and nursing support staff in conjunction with the Human Resource Department. Facilitates collaboration between clinical services under his/her supervision, other departments and the Medical Staff to provide quality patient care. Utilizes a problem-solving approach to resolving problems with nursing services, clinical services and the Medical Staff. Reviews and approves Department overtime, as needed depending on staffing needs. Participates in Budget of Nursing Department. Promotes harmonious relationships and positive attitudes with clinical services and Medical Staff. Assists the CNO and Medical Director in the preparation and monitoring of annual clinical budgets, which address staffing requirements, operational needs, and capital requests. Participates in the planning of multi-disciplinary projects. Attends and chairs administrative meetings as necessary. Serves as a consultant and role model for Clinical personnel. Serves on committees in the Center and in professional nursing organizations. Represents SBC in community activities and educational programs to ensure quality nursing education. Participates in in-house educational programs as appropriate. Monitors quality of services provided by contracted services,; Dietary Services, Laboratory services and radiology services. Performs other duties in a willing manner or as requested by the CEO, Medical Director; including assisting the Nurse Manger, Charge Nurse and other professional and non-professional staff, as required.
Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree in nursing (BSN). Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the state where practicing. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and function of management and leadership. 10 years of psychiatric clinical experience and 5 years of psychiatric nursing management and/or leadership experience. Demonstrated knowledge of heath care delivery system, its impact on nursing practice and the effective interfacing with other health care disciplines. Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication. Demonstrated knowledge of principles of Performance Improvement Planning and coordination.
