Job Description

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is a Registered Nurse who supports the Director of Nursing in the planning, organization, development, and supervision of nursing services. The ADON plays a key leadership role in clinical oversight, quality assurance, infection prevention, regulatory compliance, and staff education , ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality resident care in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical & Nursing Leadership Assist the DON in directing, supervising, and evaluating nursing staff and clinical services. Provide clinical oversight to ensure residents receive care consistent with physician orders, care plans, and regulatory standards. Participate in staffing coordination, scheduling oversight, and coverage support as needed. Serve as acting DON in the DON's absence, when assigned. Support clinical decision-making and problem resolution related to resident care. Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI) Coordinate and actively participate in the facility's QAPI program. Conduct routine and focused audits including (but not limited to): Clinical documentation Medication administration Incident/accident reports Infection control practices Care plan accuracy and timeliness Analyze audit findings, identify trends, and assist with developing corrective action plans. Monitor effectiveness of performance improvement initiatives and report outcomes to leadership. Ensure nursing practices align with facility policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Infection Prevention & Control Assist in overseeing the facility's Infection Prevention and Control Program in compliance with CDC and CMS guidelines. Conduct infection surveillance and monitor healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Assist with outbreak investigations, reporting, and mitigation efforts. Ensure compliance with isolation precautions, PPE use, hand hygiene, and environmental controls. Provide infection control education and reinforcement to nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams. Collaborate with public health authorities as required. Education & Staff Development Assist with orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff. Provide coaching, mentoring, and corrective guidance to ensure clinical competence. Participate in competency evaluations and in-service training related to quality and infection control. Reinforce regulatory expectations and best practices through hands-on leadership. Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness Maintain continuous survey readiness in accordance with CMS and state regulations. Participate in state and federal surveys, complaint investigations, and audits. Assist with development, implementation, and monitoring of Plans of Correction (POCs). Ensure accurate documentation, timely reporting, and compliance with regulatory standards. Administrative & Collaborative Duties Attend QA/QAPI, Infection Control, and leadership meetings as assigned. Communicate effectively with physicians, residents, families, and interdisciplinary team members. Support facility initiatives related to safety, quality, and resident satisfaction. Perform other duties as assigned by the DON or Administrator. Qualifications Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice (required). Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a long-term care or skilled nursing facility preferred. Prior leadership, charge nurse, or supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of CMS, CDC, OSHA, and state regulatory requirements. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to lead, coach, and collaborate effectively with staff. Preferred Certifications Infection Preventionist training or certification (CIC) preferred or willingness to obtain. QAPI or quality management training preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the role Must function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies Work Environment Skilled nursing / long-term care facility. Requires adherence to infection control and PPE protocols.
Pay:
$90,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
