Job Description

Location:
Various emergency shelter sites in Florida (site given at deployment)
Schedule:
12-hour shifts (day or night), 7 days a week, for the length of the activation (45 Days)
Start:
Immediately About the role Judit Inc. is hiring General Shelter Workers to support emergency shelter operations for Florida's hurricane response. You'll work under a Shift Supervisor and Shelter Manager to give displaced residents a safe, clean and orderly place to stay. Many will be elderly, have disabilities, or be families with young children. This is fast-paced, hands-on work that matters.
Key responsibilities Registration and intake:
Greet residents as they arrive, complete registration forms, give out ID wristbands, and direct people to their assigned areas.
Shelter setup:
Set up and break down cots, bedding, partitions and signage. Keep the sleeping areas organized.
Feeding support:
Serve meals, snacks and water. Follow food safety and sanitation rules.
Supplies:
Unload, stock and track supplies such as water, hygiene kits, blankets and cleaning materials.
Cleaning and sanitation:
Keep restrooms, sleeping areas and common spaces clean so illness doesn't spread.
Resident assistance:
Help residents with mobility, access or language needs. Answer questions and point residents to services such as medical, mental health or FEMA assistance.
Monitoring and safety:
Walk common areas and watch for safety hazards, medical concerns or conflicts. Report issues to the Shift Supervisor right away.
Shift handoffs:
Share updates at the start and end of each shift so care continues without gaps.
Required:
18 or older, with a high school diploma or GED. Able to work 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends, for the full deployment. Able to stand and walk for long periods and lift up to 40 lbs. Calm, patient and respectful with people under stress. Able to pass a background check and drug screen. Some sites, such as public schools, need a Level 2 fingerprint background check.
Preferred:
Experience in customer service, hospitality, caregiving, healthcare, social services or security. Experience with disaster response or shelters, such as Red Cross or CERT volunteering. Bilingual in English and Spanish or Haitian Creole. CPR/First Aid certification. FEMA ICS-100 and IS-700 (free online, and can be completed before deployment). Working conditions You'll work in emergency shelters such as schools, community centers and other public buildings, which may have limited privacy and shared spaces. Conditions can be crowded, noisy and emotionally demanding. You may be exposed to storm conditions, power outages and heat.
