COMPANY OVERVIEW
The Pritikin Longevity Center + Spa is dedicated to promoting health and wellness through a comprehensive, medically supervised resort experience. Located amidst 650 acres of tropical surroundings, our center has been empowering individuals to improve their health and prevent chronic diseases for over five decades.
JOB PURPOSE
The Exercise Physiologist plays a central role in delivering Pritikin's evidence-based lifestyle program by providing safe, effective, and educational exercise instruction for guests of all ages, fitness levels, chronic diseases, and physical limitations in an exercise setting. This position combines clinical exercise knowledge, functional movement instruction, and health education to empower guests to enhance their fitness, confidence, and long-term adherence to physical activity. Evening and Sunday shifts required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. CLINICAL EXERCISE & SAFETY
Perform exercise testing and assessments, including Body Composition, VO₂-based testing, Resting Metabolic Rate, and CPET protocols (training provided). Conduct pre-, during-, and post-exercise monitoring (BP, RPE, gait, symptoms, safety checks). Recognize contraindications, red-flag symptoms, and stop-or-modify indicators for guests with chronic conditions. Apply clinical judgment to ensure the highest level of safety in all exercise settings. Document observations, safety incidents, and guest progress as required. 2.
EXERCISE INSTRUCTION
(GROUP & INDIVIDUAL) Group Exercise Lead safe, engaging, and educational cardio, strength, and mobility classes aligned with Pritikin's standardized curriculum. Provide proper cueing, technique correction, and modifications for diverse abilities, particularly older adults. Maintain consistent quality, pacing, and instructional clarity across all group sessions. Individual Instruction / Personal Training Provide 1:1 and semi-private sessions tailored to functional goals, mobility, and confidence-building. Develop personalized exercise plans for guests during their stay and for continued home use. Offer corrective exercise and movement solutions for common issues (e.g., arthritis, balance deficits, muscle weakness, postural concerns). 3.
EDUCATION & LECTURING
Deliver educational presentations on exercise science, aging, healthspan, cardio training, strength training, and mobility. Translate complex scientific concepts into clear, motivating, guest-friendly explanations. Support the development of long-term exercise adherence by teaching guests how to self-monitor intensity, progression, and safety. Maintain consistency with Pritikin's science-based messaging and department standards. 4.
BEHAVIOR COACHING & GUEST SUPPORT
Assist guests in overcoming fear, deconditioning, low confidence, or physical limitations. Use supportive communication strategies (e.g., motivational interviewing principles) to encourage adherence. Provide reassurance, empathy, and structured guidance for guests who are new or returning to exercise. Help guests set realistic fitness goals and action plans for home. 5.
PROGRAM OPERATIONS & TEAM COLLABORATION
Collaborate closely with Pritikin's multidisciplinary team, including physicians, physiologists, dietitians, psychologists, and fitness leadership. Maintain facility organization, safety, and cleanliness. Ensure smooth class transitions and reliable schedule coverage. Participate in ongoing staff training, curriculum updates, and the implementation of new services. Support departmental initiatives focused on quality improvement and guest experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Strong academic background in applied exercise physiology, biomechanics, cardiopulmonary response to exercise, and aging. Certifications CPR/BLS required. NCCA-accredited certification (ACSM, ACE, NASM, NSCA) strongly preferred. Additional certifications in corrective exercise, Power Plate, Pilates, TRX, or group fitness are a plus. Experience Experience working with older adults and individuals with chronic disease (cardiac, metabolic, orthopedic, neurological) strongly preferred. Experience teaching exercise classes and/or giving educational presentations required. Experience writing exercise programs that include modifications for physical limitations. Personal training experience is beneficial. Clinical or wellness center experience preferred.
