A Health Educator creates programs that are designed to teach people and motivate them to follow healthy behaviors. Works with individual patients and families in a health care settings, or develops campaigns and materials directed to larger groups such as college students. Organizes events like health screenings, trainings for peer educators or professionals, or incentive programs like weight loss challenges. May advise on public health policy.
The Community Engagement & Health Educator, under general supervision, provides health education and awareness to community members and community organization; builds relationships between Union County Human Services and the community at large; and represents Union County Human Services at outreach events such as health fairs, community events, and coalitions. Supports the other Human Services divisions to carry out their education and outreach objectives. Assists in preparing community health assessments and reports. Attends health fairs, community events, and outreach activities to provide health education and promote public health services and awareness. Participates in coalition meetings to strengthen community partnerships, identify resources, and monitor health needs. Promotes health education through digital and public communication channels. Supports and promotes other division/departmental health and program initiatives. Assists with assessing community health needs and supports activities related to the Community Health Assessment. Promotes Union County Human Services programs, events, and other community events/outreach opportunities. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university, and at least two (2) years of experience in Public Health, Health Promotions, Health Education, and facilitating workshops and presentations to individuals and within small and large group settings; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to maintain a safe driving history as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy.
Special Requirements:
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends. This position may be subject to a fingerprint background check. Per NC General Statute 153A-94.2(b ), applicants for a position of employment required to work with children in any capacity will be required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses or Certifications:
Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Certified in Public Health (CPH). Special Requirements Bilingual English/Spanish.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
