Job Description:
The Lead Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing expert lactation care and education to patients and families while leading lactation services across the organization. This role collaborates with healthcare providers, oversees the Human Donor Milk Program, manages Baby-Friendly designation initiatives, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards. The Lead Lactation Consultant also serves as a clinical resource, supports staff education, and promotes evidence-based breastfeeding practices to enhance patient outcomes.
Requirements and Experience:
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of New York. BSN required; MSN accepted. Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in nursing, lactation, or related patient care. Current Lactation Consultant Certification (IBCLC) required. Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association. ACLS certification required within 180 days of hire. NRP certification required within 180 days of hire. Knowledge of current nursing, lactation, and healthcare best practices. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Responsibility:
Provide lactation consultation, education, and support to inpatient and outpatient families. Plan, implement, and evaluate lactation orientation and ongoing staff education programs. Coordinate patient education classes and outpatient lactation resources. Oversee the Human Donor Milk Program and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Lead and maintain Baby-Friendly designation initiatives in collaboration with providers and hospital leadership. Collect, analyze, and report data related to infant feeding and breastfeeding best practices. Serve as a clinical resource on lactation issues for healthcare staff, physicians, and patients. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to deliver high-quality patient care. Participate in performance improvement initiatives, competency requirements, and continuing education. Perform direct patient care and other related duties as assigned.
