Acts as preliminary triage to identify and flag high-risk individuals for comprehensive health appraisals, which must be validated by an RN or Provider. Logs objective clinical data—such as pulse, temperature, and visible tremors—for monitoring tools like CIWA and COWS. Adheres strictly to scope boundaries by handing off raw clinical metrics to an LPN, Paramedic, RN or Provider for actual clinical calculation and severity scoring. Emergency Responder & Clinical Care Acts as an emergency responder for acute medical incidents within the facility, performing basic life support and limited advanced life support (ALS) skills, including peripheral IV access. Executes specific, predefined emergency standing orders (e.g., severe hypoglycemia, anaphylaxis) per facility Medical Director protocols. Coordinates emergency care procedures and stabilizations with authorized nursing staff, medical staff, and external EMS transport. Develops and utilizes triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during medical responses. Medication Administration Limits & Safety Administers a specific, limited list of approved emergency medications within the AEMT scope (e.g., IV fluids, narcan, IM epinephrine, dextrose). Refrains from initiating general medical, psychiatric, or withdrawal protocols, and understands it is absolutely out of scope to initiate routine or protocol-driven medication regimens. Ensures the security of the medical area and medications while administration is occurring, keeping patient safety as the top priority. Reports any adverse patient events or reactions immediately to a supervisor. Operational Support Ensures the confidentiality and rights of patients, the health systems, and department documents by adhering to all FCH and facility policies, as well as federal, state, and local regulations. Monitors and maintains the general condition of medical response bags and emergency triage areas, keeping them clean and stocked for optimal call responses. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Knowledge and expertise in emergency response, preliminary triage, and the basic treatment of individuals in distress. Ability to quickly assess medical emergencies and implement appropriate interventions in a fast-paced correctional healthcare environment. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures effectively and calmly. Clear understanding of the legal differences between data gathering (objective logging) and independent clinical judgment. Maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with patients, staff, leadership, the public, and external partners. Possess strong judgment, discretion, high level of confidentiality, flexibility, and integrity. Strong attention to detail, follow-up, and timely completion of assigned tasks. Strong written and oral communication skills.

Summary As a vital member of the correctional healthcare team, the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) provides basic and limited advanced life support patient care, prioritizing preliminary health screening and emergency response. Operating strictly under the direction of a licensed medical provider and facility protocols, the AEMT handles pre-intake screening, intake data collection, and acts as a primary emergency responder within the facility. State-Specific Scope of Practice Definitions (Georgia & Alabama) FirstClass Healthcare (FCH) operates across multiple jurisdictions; the AEMT must strictly adhere to state-specific EMS regulations regarding correctional healthcare intakes and medical response: Georgia (GA)
Scope Definition:
Georgia recognizes the AEMT license (as well as legacy EMT-Intermediate). While GA permits paramedics to function in expanded non-traditional roles under delegated practice, AEMTs are generally restricted to emergency medical procedures. When involved in clinical assessment scales like CIWA or COWS, the GA AEMT's role is strictly limited to capturing vital signs and objective observational data for an RN or Provider to review. Alabama (AL)
Scope Definition:
Alabama trains new professionals under the AEMT curriculum. Alabama EMS regulations do not include clinical nursing assessment tools (like
CIWA/COWS
) in the standard EMS scope of practice for AEMTs. If employed in an AL jail intake, the AEMT's documentation acts solely as preliminary triage to flag high-risk individuals for an RN or Provider evaluation.
Universal Scope Boundary:
Across both states, AEMTs are strictly designated for data collection and vitals during intake, cannot independently calculate scores for clinical decision-making, and cannot initiate routine or withdrawal treatment medications without direct provider orders.
