Hybrid Position Summary:
New Day New Start Behavioral Health Center is seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and dependable Billing Specialist to manage billing operations and ensure accurate and timely processing of medical claims. The ideal candidate will be familiar with behavioral health billing procedures and insurance guidelines, including Medicaid and commercial insurers. This role is vital in supporting the financial health of our organization while ensuring clients receive the services, they need without unnecessary barriers.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims (electronic and paper) to Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance providers. Review clinical documentation to ensure correct coding and compliance with payer requirements. Follow up on unpaid claims, denials, and rejections; resubmit claims as needed. Post payments, adjustments, and denials into the billing system. Monitor aging reports and pursue unpaid balances through regular follow-ups. Communicate with insurance companies to resolve billing issues or discrepancies. Coordinate with clinical and administrative teams to ensure billing accuracy and completeness. Verify patient insurance coverage and benefits prior to services rendered. Maintain confidentiality of patient records in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Generate and send patient statements and respond to billing inquiries. Assist with audits, financial reporting, and insurance credentialing processes when necessary. Keep up to date with billing regulations and payer-specific guidelines, especially those related to behavioral health.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required, associate or bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, or related field preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience in medical billing, preferably in a behavioral health or mental health setting. Strong knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurance billing procedures. Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding. Experience with electronic health records (EHR) and billing systems (e.g., Kipu, Consolidate MD, or similar). Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to work independently. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) is a plus. Experience with Maryland Medicaid and Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) billing guidelines.
