SUMMARY:
The Lab Coordinator oversees the daily operations of the laboratory specimen collection team while maintaining direct responsibility for patient specimen collection and laboratory support services. The role ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, staff development, and efficient workflow across multiple laboratory collection sites. The Lab Coordinator serves as a clinical resource, coach, and operational leader while supporting organizational goals for quality, patient experience, employee engagement, and operational excellence.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise the daily activities of Laboratory Assistants and specimen collection personnel. Coordinate staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage across laboratory locations. Monitor productivity, staffing levels, and workflow to meet patient demand. Conducts/coordinates employee onboarding, orientation, and training. Lead staff huddles and communicate organizational updates and process improvements. Coordinates clinical competencies for staff to include program development, content, assessment, documentation, and maintenance of training records Works on projects as directed by lab management Handles patient complaints as directed Directly involved in the interview and hiring process for Lab Assistant candidates Provide coverage for Lab Manager in their absence Performs other management duties as directed by the Lab Manager. Coordinate daily specimen collection operations including courier activities Ensure timely and accurate specimen collection, labeling, handling, and transport. Monitor turnaround times and workflow metrics. Resolve patient service concerns and operational issues. Assist with the implementation of new laboratory services and workflows. Monitor inventory and order laboratory supplies. Escalate issues affecting patient care or laboratory operations. Quality and Compliance Ensure compliance with:

Monitor specimen quality indicators. Investigate specimen collection errors. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Assist during regulatory inspections and accreditation surveys. Maintain accurate documentation and competency records. Communication Works in partnership with the clinical teams, practice leadership, and senior leadership teams. Fosters strong working relationships with all levels of the organization to facilitate effective communication and to connect front line colleagues daily priorities to the organization's strategic goals. Demonstrates strong interpersonal savvy. Confidentiality Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines. Maintain confidentiality related to financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and/or colleagues. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Education:
Associate's degree in healthcare, laboratory science, or related field required, or a combination of education and relevant work experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
License/Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required, or ability to complete certification within 6 months of hire
Experience:
3 to 5 years of related lab experience required, including specimen processing and handling, and lab workflow management At least 1 year of supervisory or Lead experience required. Experience in a multi-site healthcare environment preferred. Excellent venipuncture skills required. Proficiency of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and webmail Proficiency in LIS and EMR use Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written Exceptional attention to detail Ability to foster an enhanced team environment Ability to hold teams and individuals accountable while maintaining a positive work environment Able to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality Ability to make decisions using sound judgment Ability to multitask, prioritize, organize, and plan work independently Associate's degree in healthcare, laboratory science, or related field required, or a combination of education and relevant work experience. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and other job-related reasons. Certain positions may be eligible for incentive compensation plans above and beyond base compensation.
