Job Description

The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) serves as the enterprise clinical, operational, and strategic leader for all APPs across AtlantiCare's ambulatory, acute, and post-acute settings. As a member of the Department of Nursing , the AVP reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO ) and provides system-wide leadership for APP professional practice, workforce strategy, development, governance, and performance. The AVP establishes and advances standardized APP professional practice, competency, onboarding, education, development, and care-delivery models that support APPs practicing to the full extent of their education, licensure, and certification as autonomous, collaborative members of the interdisciplinary team. The AVP partners with the acute and ambulatory CMOs and Medical Staff leadership on clinical governance, credentialing, privileging, clinical standards, quality, patient safety, and physician-APP practice relationships. Operational leaders partner with the AVP on deployment, staffing, scheduling, access, utilization, and care-model execution. The AVP l eads APP governance, workforce planning, leadership development, engagement, retention, succession planning, and continuous improvement , with accountability for alignment with the CPE and Medical Staff clinical governance framework and organizational priorities for clinical excellence, patient outcomes, access, and financial performance. Reporting Relationship This position reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for administrative leadership, workforce strategy, professional development, and operational performance. The Chief Physician Executive (CPE) serves as the executive partner for clinical governance and physician-APP practice, collaborating with the AVP and Medical Staff leadership to ensure alignment with clinical standards, credentialing and privileging requirements, quality, and patient safety. The CPE provides clinical governance oversight for APP scope of practice, credentialing and privileging, clinical standards, competency, clinical performance, peer review, and physician-APP practice relationships, in accordance with applicable law, Medical Staff Bylaws, and organizational policy. The AVP provides system-wide leadership and accountability for APP governance, workforce strategy, deployment, utilization, professional development, and operational and financial performance, in partnership with the CPE and Medical Staff leadership.
Span of leadership:
Provides enterprise leadership for all Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) across AtlantiCare. Leads APP professional practice and maintains a clinical reporting relationship with APP leads within each service line.
Collaborate with:
Service Line Leaders and Directors, Medical Staff leadership and committees, Nursing Operations, Human Resources, the Medical Staff Office/Credentialing, Graduate Medical Education, and operational leaders to ensure standardized, high-quality APP practice across the health system.

Clinical Practice Responsibilities:
20% The incumbent maintains active clinical practice (20%) to ensure continued clinical competency, credibility, and alignment with Advanced Practice Provider workflows while dedicating 80% of effort to enterprise leadership, strategic planning, professional practice, workforce development, quality, and operational responsibilities Work Environment Potential for exposure to the hazards of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, hazardous waste, and potential for injury. This position requires a moderate amount of standing and walking and the ability to lift light to moderate weight, up to approximately 20 pounds occasionally. The essential functions for this position are listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool. Licensure & Certification Current New Jersey licensure (or eligibility) as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant required. Current national board certification as appropriate to discipline. American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required upon hire or transfer;
AHA ACLS
certification preferred, based on clinical practice requirements. Certification in Physician Assistant/Nursing Leadership (NEA-BC, NE-BC) or other relevant leadership certification preferred. Education Master's degree required from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), PhD, or master's degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field preferred. Experience Minimum of seven (7) years of advanced clinical practice experience. Minimum of three (5) years of progressive leadership experience increasing responsibility in APP, clinical operations or related healthcare leadership. Demonstrated success leading APP practice models, care-team redesign, top-of-license initiatives, clinical competency programs, and workforce development. Experience collaborating with physician leadership, nursing, operations, and multidisciplinary teams across ambulatory and acute care settings. Experience with credentialing, privileging quality improvement, regulatory compliance, accreditation, and APP governance, preferred. Academic or teaching hospital experience, including student clinical education, preceptorship, or graduate medical education collaboration, preferred. Leadership Competencies Demonstrated ability to lead in a complex, matrixed healthcare environment through collaboration, influence, and relationship-building. Strong clinical credibility with APPs, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams. Strategic, data-driven leader with expertise in professional practice, quality improvement, workforce development, and care model innovation. Excellent communication, change management, and executive leadership skills with a commitment to advancing APP practice and improving patient outcomes. Operational & Physician Partnership Collaborates with the CPE, Service Line Chiefs, and operational leaders to align APP deployment, productivity, utilization, and care delivery with enterprise priorities. Provides clinical input to workforce planning while operational leaders maintain responsibility for staffing, scheduling, and day-to-day operations. Strategy & Governance Serves as the executive leader for system-wide APP governance and professional practice. Chairs the APP Leadership Council and advances strategic initiatives, care-model innovation, and regulatory compliance. Ensures APP practice aligns with organizational strategy, clinical governance, accreditation requirements, and applicable laws and regulations. Key Partnerships Chief Nursing Officer (CNO): sets nursing professional practice standards, holds joint accountability for retention, engagement, and wellbeing, and provides executive sponsorship for APP governance. Chief Physician Executive (CPE): Provides clinical governance oversight for APP practice and, in partnership with Medical Staff leadership and the AVP ensures alignment of scope of practice, credentialing and privileging, clinical standards, physician-APP relationships, quality, and patient safety with applicable laws, regulations, Medical Staff Bylaws, and organizational policies.
Service Line Leaders:
manage day-to-day deployment, panel design, and rotation scheduling within their service lines.
Medical Staff & Committees:
(Medical Executive, Credentialing, Peer Review): partner on privileging, bylaws, onboarding, and peer review processes affecting APPs. Performance Expectations Demonstrates the leadership, operational, and clinical competencies established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
