Job Description

Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is offering a tinnitus focused fourth year placement for Doctor of Audiology (AuD) student.
The AuD externship is:
A one year placement with the adult population . 50% Tinnitus focused & 50% diagnostics, hearing aids, vestibular, evoked potentials, cochlear implant and bone conduction devices. 100% at the Froedtert Hospital Main Campus (9200 W. Wisconsin Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53226) The ideal candidate for this position wants a comprehensive experience in audiology but is most interested in learning about tinnitus and sound sensitivity evaluation and management. This placement will be completed at the Koss Hearing and Balance Center, located at Froedtert Hospital. Students who complete our 4th year positions are highly sought out candidates for jobs following their externships. Please note focus is subject to change based on individual student experience and education, as well as contract between Froedtert Hospital, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the student's university. Tinnitus/Sound Sensitivity Evaluation, Assessment & Management Comprehensive Evaluation:
Comprehensive audiometry DPOAEs Ultra high frequency audiometry Immittance Comprehensive history review and interview Review and interpreting questionnaire Identifying underlying causes of tinnitus/sound sensitivity Identify bothered vs non-bothersome tinnitus Identifying when further medical workup/management is warranted Diagnosing various types of tinnitus: somatic, pulsatile vs non-pulsatile, objective vs subjective Diagnosing various forms of sound sensitivity: hyperacusis, misophonia and reactive tinnitus Implementing a comprehensive sound therapy program Appropriately fitting amplification, sound generator and combination devices for tinnitus and sound sensitivity Counseling patient on causes of tinnitus, pathophysiology of tinnitus, management options, realistic expectations Counseling and treatment plans on common tinnitus related issues: sleep disturbance, focus/concentration, emotional distress, hearing loss, sound sensitivity Familiarity with various tinnitus management options: sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques Identifying which management options are best for each individual patient Familiarity with implementing a treatment plan in presence of multiple tinnitus related issues Continued follow up as needed with patient Approximately 50% of externship is Diagnostic Audiology, Hearing Aids & Cochlear Implant Diagnostic Audiometry and Impedance testing including acoustic reflexes and decay Otoscopy (standard and video) Videonystagmography (VNG) Rotational Chair Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) Posturography (POG) (with physical therapy) Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP) (both ocular and cervical) Vestibular Rehab (with physical therapy) Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry (ABR), diagnostic and threshold Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) Cerumen Management Ototoxic Monitoring Occupational Hearing annual hearing conservation Hearing Aid Evaluations Hearing Aid Fittings Aural Rehab (in the context of hearing aid fittings/follow up) Earmold Impression Taking & Earmold Modifications Hearing Aid Follow-up Hearing Aid Verification & Validation Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) Cochlear Implant Evaluation Cochlear Implant Activation Cochlear Implant Follow-Up Osseointegrated Devices If interested, see details below. Candidate will need to interview and complete separate onboarding orientation. This job will require application and obtaining a Wisconsin HIS "trainee" license upon acceptance of position. A Wisconsin HIS license (which requires taking an in-person exam) will then be obtained after starting. Will interview travel be compensated?

Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Applicants should have a diverse range of clinical practicum experiences and should be comfortable with basic audiometric testing and history taking. Basic understanding of hearing aids. Demonstrate good communication skills. Students should have a high level of motivation, professionalism and willingness to learn. Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Over the course of the year, we expect the extern to become proficient and independent at performance of comprehensive hearing and vestibular assessments. Competent in hearing aid selection/evaluation, consultation, dispensing/fitting, verification and validation, troubleshooting and programming. Additionally, the student will gain confidence in tinnitus evaluation and tinnitus management/counseling and evoked potentials (VEMP, ABR, ASSR). Student will also have experience with cochlear implant and osseointegrated devices. Yes Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Holy Family Memorial also have otolaryngology and audiology services which we collaborate with, but students are not expected to go to these sites. How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship? As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: University must complete an affiliation agreement and program memorandum. Provide preceptor with appropriate required paperwork and deadlines. Be available to communicate about student's progress, attendance, skills, participation, etc.

These will be completed between September 14-18th, 2026 In person tour of facilities can be scheduled after interview but is not required. Not following the ACEN Externship timeline. Steps for the student/university to follow in the application process: Complete an affiliation agreement and program memorandum with Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin. Assist student in meeting and providing proof of requirements: both malpractice insurance and general liability insurance, Flu/MMR vaccines, TB negative test, as appropriate.
