The Direct Support Professional (DSP) will provide one-on-one, individualized support to a young adult in the Self-Determination Program. The DSP will promote independence, engagement, safety, and well-being across health, daily living, communication, recreation, and community participation. This role requires consistency, empathy, creativity, and strong modeling skills, especially around communication and visual supports Key Responsibilities 1. Daily Health & Wellness Support- Assist Client with personal hygiene, medication tracking, and health routines using visual aids.
- Support development of consistent sleep and wellness habits through structured routines.
- Help prepare for and attend medical, dental, and therapy appointments; use role-play and modeling to reduce anxiety.
- Integrate AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) into daily health-related conversations and activities. 2. Community Participation & Recreation
- Provide direct support during community outings including art classes, swimming lessons, fitness activities, and library visits.
- Use visual schedules and sensory-preference guides to prepare Client for outings and transitions.
- Promote confidence and regulation through predictable routines and calm, supportive presence in community settings.
- Encourage exploration of new environments while monitoring sensory tolerance and fatigue. 3. Safe Community Navigation
- Teach and reinforce basic community safety routines such as safe walking, seatbelt use, and appropriate public behavior.
- Use photo guides, travel social stories, and visual prompts to increase comfort with repeated outings to familiar locations.
- Provide full supervision during all outings; help Jeanhae build recognition of safe, repeatable community routes. 4. Independent Living Skill Building
- Support Client in completing household routines including cooking, cleaning, laundry, and budgeting with adapted tools and visual guides.
- Reinforce sequencing and task completion through step-by-step visuals and structured repetition.
- Assist with safe grocery shopping and responsible money use, including use of budgeting apps and debit cards. 5. Communication Development
- Model consistent AAC use across all settings and routines to help client express needs, choices, and feelings.
- Support participation in communication programs such as Jazzy Talkers and Voice Your Choice.
- Use visual supports, communication boards, and gestures to encourage expressive communication and track progress. 6. Volunteer Exploration & Employment Readiness
- Facilitate site visits, shadowing, and trial periods at volunteer locations aligned with Clients's interests.
- Develop and use visual tools to support routines and reduce anxiety during volunteer activities.
- Promote skill-building and community contribution while maintaining a calm, supportive presence throughout.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
- At least one year of experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, preferably in a DSP, behavioral, or educational setting
- Familiarity with or willingness to be trained in AAC systems and visual supports
- Comfortable supporting in community and recreational environments (e.g., swimming pools, gyms, public libraries)
- Valid California driver's license, clean DMV record, and reliable transportation
- Must pass a DOJ/FBI background check (Live Scan) specific to the Self-Determination Program
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days)
- Must be a patient, respectful, non-smoking individual who honors routine, sensory preferences, and communication needs
