1:1 Personal Aide
Job Description
Job Overview A family is hiring a 1:1 Personal Aide for their adult family member who attends The Helix Adult Academy (THAA) in San Rafael, CA, a post-secondary program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The aide will work on-site at THAA during program hours to help the student participate in classes and activities as fully and independently as possible. This role involves hands-on personal care, including support with eating, toileting, and mobility throughout the day. The aide is employed directly by the family and reports to them. While on-site, the aide must adhere to all THAA policies, procedures, and staff directives, collaborating cooperatively with the Program Director and instructional team. By providing consistent daily support, the aide will learn the student's communication style, preferences, and success strategies to deliver steady, respectful, and individualized care.
Note:
This position covers personal care and learning environment support. It does not provide Adaptive Skills Training or execute individualized adaptive skills plans. Duties Help the student with eating and drinking at meals and snack times Help the student with toileting and personal hygiene in a way that protects their privacy and dignity Help with mobility, positioning, and moving around campus, including transfers when needed Encourage the student to do as much for themselves as they safely can Learning and Participation Support Give one-on-one support to the student throughout the program day, including classes, breaks, lunch, and transitions Help the student follow classroom routines, directions, and schedules, prompting them when needed Reinforce what instructors teach and help the student stay engaged and organized during lessons and activities Encourage positive social interactions with classmates, staff, and community members Use calm, consistent, positive approaches to help the student manage stress, frustration, or changes in routine Safety and Communication Keep the student safe and supervised at all times, following all THAA policies, safety/emergency procedures, and staff directives Keep daily records of personal care, observations, and notable events to share with the family Share relevant information with the Program Director or instructional team when site assistance is required Maintain open communication with the family regarding the student's day and any concerns Uphold student and family confidentiality while treating the student with dignity and respect at all times Qualifications Minimum of 1 year of direct service experience working with individuals with autism, intellectual or developmental disabilities, or other special needs Direct experience providing personal care, including help with eating, toileting, hygiene, and mobility transfers Knowledge of special education principles, positive behavior support strategies, or a background in behavioral health/social services preferred Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with the student, family, and THAA staff Patience, flexibility, good judgment, and the ability to maintain a calm presence when challenging situations arise Reliable, punctual, and committed to consistent daily attendance Physically able to execute mobility support, transfers, and remain active throughout the program day Verifiable background check required

30 hours per week
