Job Description

Overview I have cerebral palsy and use a power wheelchair, and I direct all my own care. I'm looking for a dependable, hands-on aide to assist me physically with all activities of daily living on weekends, and to help me get out and be active in the community. This is not a temporary or fill-in job. My care needs are daily and ongoing, and what matters most to me is finding someone dependable who wants steady, long-term work and who shows up consistently. This role starts with the weekend shift, but there is real potential to grow into more hours over time for the right person.
Schedule:
Saturday and Sunday, starting between 7:00 and 9:00 AM, at least 5 hours each day. Hours may end early or run longer depending on the day. Duties — Getting-up routine Assisting with my transfer from bed to power wheelchair. I can bear weight briefly and pivot with steady, hands-on support. Toileting assistance. Hygiene assistance — usually body wipes and deodorant; an occasional shower if needed. Full dressing — clothing, socks, and shoes. Preparing and feeding breakfast. I'm fed one bite at a time and drink through a straw. Administering my medications and supplements (you prepare and give them under my direction). Brushing my teeth and setting up any equipment I need for the day. Preparing and cooking meals. Helping care for my dog and cats — feeding, letting the dog out, etc. Duties — Out in the community Accompanying me on outings — stores, errands, appointments, restaurants, or just getting out and about. Retrieving items I can't reach and handling the physical selecting and carrying. Managing payment on my behalf under my direction (cash, card, etc.). Loading, unloading, and carrying bags. Opening doors and helping me navigate stores and public spaces safely. Toileting and feeding/hydration assistance while we're out. I use paratransit for transportation on outings — you'll help me get to and from the vehicle and accompany me. What I'm looking for Reliable and punctual. I depend on consistent coverage. Comfortable with hands-on personal care, including bathing and toileting. Physically able to assist with transfers and provide steady, stable physical support. I can bear weight and pivot, but you need to be a capable, confident physical presence and comfortable with the demands of transfers. A patient communicator. My speech can be hard to understand at first, and I also use a communication device. Calm and steady. I have some involuntary movements and occasional muscle spasms that are part of my condition. I'll explain everything and walk you through it. Respectful of the fact that this is my home and my care, and that I direct how things are done. Reliable transportation to get to my home in Newark on time. This is required. High school diploma or equivalent required. A background check is required before hire. Nice to have (not required): prior caregiving, CNA, HHA, or PCA experience; experience with power wheelchairs or transfers.
