- Mon 6AM-2PM The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing person-centered care, supervision, training, and support to individuals residing in Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) licensed residential homes.
The DSP assists individuals with activities of daily living, medication administration, health and safety needs, behavioral support, community participation, and implementation of Individual Program Plans (IPPs) and Individual Support Plans (ISPs). Key Responsibilities Direct Support and Individual Care Provide person-centered supervision, care, training, and support to individuals residing in APD-licensed residential homes. Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, dining, mobility assistance, personal hygiene, and medication self-administration training while promoting dignity, independence, and personal choice. Support individuals in developing and maintaining independent living skills, social skills, communication skills, self-help skills, and community participation. Implement goals, objectives, and support strategies identified in Individual Program Plans (IPPs), Individual Support Plans (ISPs), behavior support plans, and other service plans. Provide guidance, encouragement, and positive reinforcement to promote personal growth, self-confidence, and increased independence. Assist individuals with budgeting, shopping, personal purchases, clothing needs, hygiene supplies, and personal belongings. Health and Medication Support Administer medications in accordance with physician orders, agency policies, state regulations, and approved medication administration procedures. Monitor individuals for changes in physical, emotional, behavioral, or mental health and promptly report concerns to appropriate supervisory or healthcare personnel. Maintain medication inventories, coordinate prescription refills, and ensure medications are properly stored, secured, and documented. Coordinate, transport, and accompany individuals to medical appointments, treatment services, and other healthcare-related activities as assigned. Follow infection control procedures, universal precautions, and health and safety guidelines at all times. Ensure first aid supplies, emergency equipment, and medical supplies are properly maintained and readily available. Community Integration and Skill Development Support individuals in participating in recreational, educational, vocational, volunteer, and community-based activities. Encourage meaningful social interactions, community involvement, and relationship building. Plan and facilitate activities that enhance quality of life, promote inclusion, and support achievement of individual goals. Provide transportation to appointments, community activities, employment programs, and other approved destinations as assigned. Behavioral Support Establish and maintain professional, respectful, and supportive relationships with individuals served. Implement approved behavioral support strategies and interventions. Observe, document, and report behavioral incidents, emotional concerns, and significant changes in functioning. Utilize approved de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques when responding to behavioral challenges or emergency situations. Promote a structured, safe, and supportive environment that supports individual success and well-being. Documentation and Communication Complete accurate, timely, and professional documentation, including progress notes, medication administration records (MARs), communication logs, incident reports, data collection, appointment summaries, and other required records. Maintain records in accordance with agency policy, APD requirements, HIPAA standards, and applicable regulations. Collect and document information related to training objectives, behavioral supports, health services, and individual outcomes. Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, healthcare professionals, guardians, family members, support coordinators, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. Participate in IPP, ISP, team meetings, staff meetings, and other agency-required meetings as assigned. Residential Operations and Safety Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and sanitary residential environment. Assist with housekeeping duties, laundry, meal preparation, room organization, household chores, and inventory management. Ensure residents have adequate clothing, hygiene items, personal supplies, and household necessities. Conduct routine safety inspections and report maintenance concerns, hazards, equipment malfunctions, and repair needs using established procedures. Ensure chemicals, medications, cleaning supplies, and hazardous materials are properly secured and stored. Monitor safety equipment, emergency supplies, cameras, and related systems and report concerns immediately. Participate in fire drills, emergency preparedness activities, and incident response procedures. Respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, injuries, behavioral crises, and other urgent situations. Follow all agency policies, ethical standards, safety requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Professional Development Attend and successfully complete all required trainings, certifications, meetings, and professional development activities. Assist with onboarding, orientation, training, and mentoring of newly hired staff as assigned. Serve as a positive role model for individuals served and fellow team members. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Medication Technician certification or completion of state-approved medication administration training preferred. Minimum six months of experience working in healthcare, residential care, mental health, developmental disabilities, or human services preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education requirements. Knowledge of medication administration practices and direct care procedures preferred. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, or schedule form. Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in stressful situations. CPR, First Aid, and Medication Administration certifications preferred or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record may be required. Must be eligible for employment under applicable State of Florida statutes and successfully complete required fingerprinting, abuse registry screenings, and local, state, and federal background checks. Employees operating company vehicles must meet agency driving eligibility requirements, including maintaining a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and insurability under the agency's insurance carrier guidelines. Employees using personal vehicles for business purposes must maintain proof of a valid driver's license and current vehicle insurance. Physical Requirements Ability to safely lift, transfer, and reposition residents, typically up to 50 pounds, using proper lifting techniques and teamwork assistance when necessary. Ability to assist residents with standing, walking, repositioning, and mobility support. Ability to push and pull wheelchairs, walkers, and medical equipment. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Manual dexterity sufficient to assist with grooming, feeding, bathing, and medication administration. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately during emergency situations. Sufficient visual acuity to monitor resident safety, read medication labels, observe changes in condition, and differentiate small objects such as pills. Sufficient hearing and communication ability to effectively interact with residents, staff, and healthcare professionals. Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks throughout assigned shifts. Ability to maintain physical stamina during long or overnight shifts as required. Ability to safely operate mobility aids and basic medical equipment. Ability to work in varying residential environments, including small spaces. Ability to tolerate exposure to household cleaning products and bodily fluids while utilizing proper protective equipment. Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as required. Ability to multitask and change tasks immediately and as needed in priority of situation. Work Environment This position is performed within a residential group home setting and involves working with individuals who may have developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, behavioral challenges, or medical needs.
