Part-time, with additional hours available during school breaks We are looking for a dependable and engaging Direct Support Professional (DSP)/Community Habilitation worker to provide one-on-one support to a 12-year-old boy with autism in the Delmar area. He is verbal, friendly, energetic, curious, and fun to spend time with. He especially enjoys science and math, reading, watching videos, playing games, creating art, and making up imaginative stories. He also enjoys activities such as swimming, trampoline parks, sensory activities, and trips into the community. The right person will help him build independence, develop social and life skills, become more physically active, explore new interests, and safely participate in activities outside the home. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working one-on-one and wants to develop a meaningful, consistent relationship with the person they support. Schedule This is primarily a part-time position during the school year. Additional daytime hours may be available during school holidays and school breaks, with the potential for up to full-time hours during some breaks.Responsibilities include:
- Provide one-on-one supervision and support at home and in the community
- Help plan and participate in recreational and community activities
- Encourage exercise and active leisure opportunities
- Support development of social skills, independence, and age-appropriate life skills
- Help introduce new hobbies, classes, activities, and community experiences
- Provide calm, positive support when he becomes frustrated, using redirection and other appropriate behavior-support strategies. Frustration can occasionally result in damage to objects or electronics, so the right candidate should be comfortable staying composed and helping him work through those moments safely.
- Reinforce community and personal safety skills
- Provide transportation to activities and community outings as needed
- Complete required documentation related to services provided
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid New York State driver's license required
- Reliable personal transportation required
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
- Dependable, patient, encouraging, and comfortable working one-on-one
- Experience working with children, individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, special education, childcare, or direct care is preferred but not required Candidates with backgrounds in childcare, education, special education, behavioral support, senior care, or other helping professions are encouraged to apply.
