Job Description

Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic, Inc., is a congregation of Catholic religious sisters who have served as missionaries since 1912, when we became the first group of Catholic sisters in the United States founded for overseas mission. Today, we have more than 200 sisters serving in 18 places around the world and throughout the United States, including at our Center House in Ossining, N.Y. POSITION SUMMARY
The Home Health Care Aide provides regular outreach and home health care services as needed to Sister residents who live in the Main Building, Floors I and II; Rogers Building; or temporarily in a room on Main 3. This position maintains or procures maintenance for special medically related equipment required by users of Clinic services. Position may accompany Sisters, as needed, to medical appointments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, LISTED IN PRIORITY 1.
Outreach and Out Patient Care Services A. Maintains regular contact with Sister Residents identified by the Administrator, Clinic Nurse, Charge Nurse or one of the Center Coordinators to perform the following:
  • Check with Clinic Nurse and Charge Nurse daily on general condition of sisters and to obtain specific information needed for the day.
  • Assist with specific scheduled morning tasks to include giving eye and ear drops, foot creams and stockings, blood pressure checks, reminders to take medications and reminders of appointments. Assists with showers, if needed.
  • Arrange times for sisters needing hot packs.
  • Check ice and coffee. Ice machine should be clean and functioning and coffee should be made and available.
  • Change sheets and do laundry for those sisters who request this. Light housekeeping should be done as needed.
  • Complete rounds in the morning and afternoon to see if sisters need assistance.
  • Distribute pill boxes, incontinence supplies and appointment slips, as needed.
  • Update assessment of the resident's management of activities of daily living (ADL) and assist as necessary.
  • Inform Clinic Nurse or Charge Nurse of significant changes in reference to the Resident.
  • Procure, maintain and provide adjustments and repairs for walkers, wheelchairs, canes, hydroculators, wax machine, etc.
B. Oversees and maintains supplies in clinic closets, bathrooms and the kitchen, as well as disposables in coffee shops in Main 1 and 2 and Rogers 2 and 3. C. Assists residents in emergency situations, when required. D. Provides direction for other Home Health Care Aides, as requested by the nurse. E. Assists nursing staff, as requested, by completing orders for lab tests, performing EKG's, maintaining blood pressure records; and doing skin treatments and ear irrigations, as requested.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Attends morning meetings three times each week.
  • Accompanies sisters on appointments, as requested.
REQUIREMENTS TO CARRY OUT ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
(a.) Interest in working with sick and elderly people, and to treat them in a consistent, caring manner while providing services. (b.) Ability to assess functioning, to judge implications, and to communicate observations in a well-focused manner to providers, nursing staff, or responsible persons in the Clinic. (c.) Ability to accept responsibility, prioritize tasks, work independently as team member, take initiative, and organize. (d.) Flexibility to adapt to emergency situations and changing plans. (e.) Ability to lift resident patients with assistance from another. (f.) Ability to maintain, repair, or procure new equipment for the physically handicapped. (g.) Ability to be self-directed and take initiative (h.) Good stamina to walk, stand and move around the building for majority of work time. (i.) Ability to work cooperatively and take direction from nurses. 2.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Two or more years as health care aide, or nursing assistant 3.
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED
High School Diploma or equivalent
