This position is a great fit for someone who enjoys building genuine relationships, supporting independence, and helping an individual navigate both everyday life and more complex medical and behavioral needs. The individual is looking for staff who will support their choices, encourage independence, and work alongside them—not take over for them. The ideal DSP will be patient, observant, adaptable, and comfortable providing support when situations become challenging. Medical & Health Support Assist the individual with managing and navigating their medical needs. Provide support with health-related routines and monitoring as outlined in their individualized support plan. Recognize changes in health or functioning and communicate concerns appropriately. Support medical appointments, follow-up care, and communication with healthcare providers when needed. Follow established health and safety protocols and complete required documentation. Be comfortable learning and following individualized medical support procedures. Behavioral & Emotional Support Provide calm, consistent support during periods of anxiety, frustration, or emotional dysregulation. Follow individualized behavioral/support strategies. Help identify triggers and use proactive strategies to reduce escalation. Maintain professional boundaries while developing a trusting and respectful relationship. Support the individual in communicating their needs and making choices. Remain calm and solution-focused during challenging situations. Community Engagement & Independence Support the individual in getting out into the community and participating in activities that are meaningful to them. Encourage opportunities for socialization, recreation, hobbies, and personal interests. Assist with transportation and community activities as appropriate. Help build confidence and independence in navigating the community. Support the individual in making their own choices about how they spend their time. Look for opportunities to help the individual try new things and develop skills. What We're Looking For The ideal candidate is someone who: Is compassionate, patient, and dependable. Has strong communication and documentation skills. Can work independently while also communicating effectively with the larger support team. Understands the importance of promoting choice, dignity, independence, and self-direction . Enjoys getting out into the community rather than providing support only inside the home. Can build a genuine working relationship based on trust and mutual respect. Understands that every person is different and is willing to adapt their approach to the individual's needs. Experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, complex medical needs, behavioral support needs, or community-based services is preferred. However, the right attitude, reliability, willingness to learn, and ability to build a positive relationship are equally important. Training will be provided for individual-specific support needs. Core Responsibilities Provide individualized direct support based on the individual's ISP and support plans. Promote independence and self-determination. Provide medical and health-related support within the scope of the position and required training. Implement behavioral and emotional support strategies. Support community participation and meaningful activities. Assist with appointments, errands, and other activities of daily living. Maintain accurate progress notes and required documentation. Communicate changes, concerns, incidents, and significant events to the appropriate members of the support team. Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
