He has held the same community job for over 20 years and takes real pride in his independence. You will support him in the community and at home, help him stay active and healthy, and help him keep building new skills.
Consistency matters here:
we want someone who plans to stay. What You'll Do Keep him active: drive him to the local YMCA up to 3 times a week and join him for swimming, weights and the exercise bike (he is a strong swimmer with Special Olympics medals and does not need water supervision, just a companion and ride) Get him to the places that matter: weekly church on Tuesdays, monthly haircuts, bowling, movies, sporting events, farmers markets, restaurants and new volunteer opportunities, including a local senior center Support health appointments: help him schedule medical, dental, eye and podiatry visits, drive him there, and help him explain how he is feeling to the provider Teach everyday skills using pictures and practice, not reading: recognizing numbers, telling time, and handling money at the register, including checking his change and keeping receipts so he is not overcharged Coach community safety: looking both ways when crossing streets, paying attention to surroundings, locking the door after walking the dogs Help at home: organizing his room, laundry settings, and household tasks he chooses to work on, with checklists for items like keys, wallet, phone, water bottle and swim gear Follow his Positive Behavior Support Plan and work alongside his behavior specialist Post a daily update in the Vet Fixer portal covering activities and ISP goals worked on The Approach That Works He responds best to a calm, respectful, patient style.
The right DSP will:
Offer choices instead of orders ("Do you want to go to the Y before lunch or after?") Use first/then statements, visual schedules and a heads up before transitions Start with easy requests and build momentum before harder ones Model a task and do it together, then ask him to repeat it back, since he may say "I got it" before he fully understands Speak clearly, face him, and slow the pace; he talks quickly and may be experiencing some hearing loss Stay calm and give space if he becomes frustrated or raises his voice; suggest a break, redirect, and talk it through once he is ready Give praise right away when things go well Notice and report changes in memory, sleep or walking, since he is in his 60s Requirements All requirements in Part 1, including a reliable personal vehicle with a valid driver's license, current auto insurance and current registration (daily transportation is a core part of this role) Comfortable in a pool and gym setting Comfortable around dogs in the home Willing to be trained on and follow a Positive Behavior Support Plan Great Fit If You Have supported older adults or adults with intellectual disabilities Enjoy sports, swimming, movies, classic cars or trying new restaurants (great for building rapport) Are patient, steady and good at teaching through hands on practice Can commit to a consistent weekly schedule How to Apply Apply at vetfixerllc.com/careers and note "Coatesville IHCS" in your application, or call 484-378-2277 .
