Job Description

The Student - Science Lab Aide is responsible for providing support to the Science Department by performing a variety of tasks related to the support of chemistry, biology, geology and physics lab classes, and assisting the Science Lab Manager by preparing accurate concentrations of chemicals to make solutions and set up lab carts.

Duties and Responsibilities :
Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position: Sets up and breaks down equipment, chemicals and supplies for chemistry, biology, geology, and /or physics labs Prepares molar solutions of acids by diluting concentrated solutions Prepares media and grows bacteria Calculates relative volumes of concentrated acid and water Calculates required mass and prepares standard solutions of salt and bases Handles preserved specimens, including cadavers Ensures safe work environment by complying with OSHA regulations for handling hazardous materials Follows waste regulations and proper procedures in the disposal of chemicals Sterilizes equipment properly and cleans glassware using the appropriate solvents Maintains fish tanks, reptile tanks, and plants as needed Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Additionally, employees must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with students, faculty and staff, and the public. Employees will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Enrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summer Possess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or higher Completion a science lab class with a "B" or better Students attending Cochise College on an F-1 Visa require full-time enrollment with a minimum of 12 credits per semester and six credits in the summer
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures Knowledge of the cleaning specifications of various laboratory equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related materials Knowledge of quality, safety, and/or infection control standards Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail Ability to analyze problems, identifies solutions, and takes appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public Instructor recommendation preferred
Work Environment :
Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical classroom or laboratory setting with appropriate climate controls and includes exposure to mechanical and chemical hazards.
Physical Requirements :
Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds requires a good deal of walking or standing, or involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
