The laboratory is located in Tulare, California, and supports clinical trials, carries out in vitro experiments, and serves local dairy farms.
Position Responsibilities:
Manage our microbiology laboratory mainly focused on identifying and characterizing bacteria causing mastitis in milk (and to a lesser extent in feces and nasal secretions) using culture medium and qPCR. Perform in vitro experiments using batch and continuous culture systems evaluating the effects of feed additives and other compounds on rumen fermentation outputs (total gas and methane production, volatile fatty acids, ammonia, etc) and microbial communities, among others. Assist with/manage the laboratory portion of large clinical trials. Preparation of finished lab reports for samples processed by the laboratory. Administrative tasks associated with the purchase of laboratory supplies, and record maintenance. Timely cleaning and disinfecting of the laboratory, as well as handling of biohazard and general waste. Compliance with safety and quality assurance requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Degree in Microbiology / Molecular Biology / Fermentation / Animal Science or related fields. Proficient knowledge in microbiology and laboratory methods. Lab bench skills with experience identifying and quantifying bacteria using culture medium. Training and experience working with qPCR. Background on molecular biology is very desirable. Intellectual curiosity and interest in participating (and eventually lead) in research projects, including clinical trials. Strong works ethics and attention to detail with a commitment to provide quality results in a timely fashion. Highly motivated energetic professional willing to welcome challenge and overcome adversity. Willingness to work overtime, nights or weekends depending on workload demands. Proficient with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel and Power-Point).
