Job Description

The incumbent performs analytical work in a state accredited laboratory involving chemical and bacteriological analyses associated with the operation of a drinking water facility. Work is performed through standard laboratory methods governed by drinking water procedures, regulations and policies. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports, and quality controlled results. Performs a wide variety of chemical, organic, and bacteriological analyses using approved methods and procedures specified by drinking water regulations. Maintains technical records pertaining to sample collection, analysis, and results as prescribed by applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Schedules and oversees the maintenance, adjustment, and calibration of laboratory instruments, apparatus, or testing equipment for the laboratory and operations. Maintains cleanliness of laboratory facilities and equipment. Prepares solutions, culture media, and reagents used in chemical, organic, and microbiological analysis. Collects water samples, calibrates and maintains field instrumentation and support documentation. Ensures work quality by adhering to standard operating procedures and methods to maintain sample analysis integrity. Calibrates and maintain instruments for operator and main labs; and maintains instrument records. Analyzes various stages of water treatment and monitor drinking water quality according to FDEP, EPA, and TNI. Performs other assigned duties as assigned. Bachelor's degree with major course work in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or a related field (Proof of education must be uploaded with application). One (1) year of experience in a water or an environmental laboratory. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license. Knowledge of scientific principles, theories, and practices on a wide range of analyses and procedures used in an accredited drinking water plant laboratory. Knowledge of preparing solutions, culture media, and reagents used in laboratory and field procedures, and analyses associated with a drinking water plant operations. Knowledge of State and Federal rules and regulations related to potable drinking water. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboratory work. Skill in calibrating and operating modern analytical instruments and general laboratory equipment. Ability to keep accurate and legible records, logs and benchsheets of analyses performed. Ability to access, store, and populate data in a computer. Ability to communicate effectively written and orally. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to make mathematical computations. Ability and willingness to work overtime and holidays. Ability to wear personal protective equipment. Ability to use hands and fingers to perform titrations and other lab tasks. Ability to learn, understand, remember, organize and carry out work assignments independently. Ability to safely work with and around chemicals and materials associated with laboratory activities and the water treatment process. Ability to identify colors and hues, tints and shades by sight. Ability to smell, identify, and distinguish odors in laboratory water analyses. Ability to adapt to new technology and methods to enhance laboratory effectiveness. Ability to work in adverse environmental weather and working conditions (outdoors, standing water, heat and noise).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, mental acuity reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is typically performed in the laboratory and field in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.
