Job Description

Job Title:
Lab Technician Job Description This role supports a production-focused laboratory by performing chlorine monitoring, daily grading of salt stockpiles, and a wide range of wet chemistry and chemical analyses. The lab technician prepares and tests chemical solutions, maintains accurate documentation, and partners with other technicians to ensure consistent product quality. The position is hands-on and physically demanding, requiring frequent lifting, movement between facilities, and work in a salt mine environment while upholding strict quality control standards and a clean workspace. Responsibilities + Monitor chlorine levels and perform routine checks to ensure products meet established specifications. + Conduct daily grading and inspection of salt stockpiles to assess quality and consistency. + Perform chemical analysis and wet chemistry testing on samples from the production line and finished products. + Prepare chemical solutions according to established formulas and procedures. + Run daily samples, conduct tests on those samples, and interpret results to support quality control decisions. + Perform quality control inspections of products and samples coming off the production line, including pulling samples and testing them during and after production. + Document all tests, results, and activities accurately on paper and in electronic systems to maintain complete traceability of work performed and materials sent out. + Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe workspace in the laboratory and surrounding areas. + Partner and coordinate with other lab technicians on shift to ensure efficient workflow and consistent testing coverage. + Transport samples between the mill and the satellite lab building, including carrying bags of salt and other materials as needed. + Follow all laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines while working independently after training. + Adapt to working alone after the training period, managing time, tasks, and priorities effectively in a satellite lab environment. Essential Skills + At least 1 year of experience working in a laboratory setting (excluding medical laboratories). + Hands-on experience with wet chemistry techniques and chemical analysis. + Experience conducting lab testing, including preparation of chemical solutions according to formulas. + Experience running daily samples and testing those samples in a production or quality-focused lab. + Experience in quality control or quality assurance, including inspection and testing of products coming off a production line. + Ability to perform quality inspections and maintain consistent quality standards. + Familiarity with titration and related analytical lab techniques. + Ability to accurately complete documentation on paper and electronically to ensure full traceability. + Ability to lift approximately 40 pounds on a daily basis. + Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including climbing multiple flights of stairs and carrying samples. + Strong ability to learn quickly and adapt to new procedures and processes. + Strong soft skills, including communication, teamwork during training, and the ability to work independently after training. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience with quality analysis, lab analysis, and lab testing in an industrial or manufacturing environment. + Previous experience in quality control, quality inspection, or QC functions supporting production operations. + Comfort working with data entry and basic computer systems for recording test results and maintaining records. + Interest in long-term opportunities, with the potential to convert to a direct position based on performance. + Reliability and consistency in following established lab protocols and safety guidelines. + Comfort working independently in a satellite lab after the training period. Work Environment This role operates in a salt mine and production environment that is humid, dirty, and physically demanding. The laboratory is located in a satellite building separate from the mill, and the lab technician will frequently transport samples between the mill and the lab, including carrying bags of salt and other materials. The position requires going up and down several (approximately three) flights of stairs multiple times per day or week. Training lasts up to approximately four weeks, depending on how quickly the technician learns the processes. The training schedule is Monday through Friday and every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. After training, the technician will typically work independently and may be alone in the lab for significant portions of the shift. The work involves regular lifting of samples and equipment, as well as consistent adherence to safety and quality protocols. The organization offers 80 hours of paid time off and an additional 6 days of holiday pay; employees scheduled to work on a holiday are paid their normal rate, while those not scheduled to work on holidays receive holiday pay. There is an opportunity to transition from contract to a direct role based on performance. The dress code during training requires jeans, steel toe boots, and a T-shirt with no short sleeves, and a uniform will be provided a few weeks after the start date. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
