Job Title:
Fragrance Lab Technician (Lab Support) Job Description This entry-level Fragrance Lab Technician role offers a hands-on introduction to a professional laboratory within a growing fragrance manufacturing environment. You will support fragrance compounding, quality testing, and product development by preparing formulations, organizing lab materials, and assisting with sample preparation and testing. This position suits someone who enjoys practical, detail-oriented work, thrives in a fast-paced setting, and wants to build a long-term career in the laboratory and fragrance industry. Responsibilities Compound and prepare fragrance formulations based on established formulas and procedures. Prepare, label, and process fragrance samples for testing and shipment to internal and external stakeholders. Perform basic laboratory testing, including specific gravity, refractive index, flash point, and other physical property measurements. Accurately document laboratory work, test results, and observations in accordance with lab standards. Restock laboratory materials, maintain inventory, and keep the workspace clean, organized, and well supplied. Retrieve raw materials and supplies from the production floor as needed to support ongoing lab work. Work closely with perfumers, other lab technicians, and production personnel to meet customer deadlines and production timelines. Gradually increase throughput to compound and test approximately 12-20 fragrance formulas per day. Follow established procedures and safety guidelines while handling chemicals, equipment, and samples. Contribute to a collaborative team environment by communicating effectively and supporting colleagues during peak workload periods. Take part in learning opportunities to develop skills in advanced analytical techniques, with potential exposure to instrumentation such as GC-MS. Essential Skills Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, or another scientific field (Bachelor's degree preferred but not required). Laboratory experience gained through school, internships, or previous employment, including hands-on lab work. Ability to follow detailed procedures, laboratory protocols, and standard operating instructions accurately. Experience documenting results clearly and consistently in lab notebooks or electronic systems. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities may shift and multiple tasks run in parallel. Ability to perform hands-on work for most of the day and remain on your feet throughout the workday. Strong attention to detail when measuring, compounding, labeling, and recording data. Comfort working around a wide variety of fragrances and strong scents without allergies or significant sensitivities. Effective communication skills to collaborate with perfumers, lab technicians, and production staff. Motivation to learn, take initiative, and grow within a laboratory-focused career path. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline such as Biology, Chemistry, or Food Science. Experience in fast-paced environments such as restaurants, food service, retail, customer service, manufacturing, or other multitasking-intensive roles. Prior exposure to quality control, analytical testing, or product development in a lab or manufacturing setting. Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment and measurements, including specific gravity and refractive index testing. Interest in developing skills in advanced analytical techniques, including potential future training on instrumentation such as GC-MS. Desire to explore future career paths in areas such as perfumery, quality control, formulation development, regulatory affairs, or other laboratory and manufacturing roles. Enthusiasm for hands-on work, continuous learning, and contributing to a small, collaborative lab team. Work Environment The laboratory is located within a manufacturing facility and operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Approximately 90% of the role involves hands-on laboratory work, such as compounding, testing, and sample preparation, while about 10% involves documentation and retrieving materials from the production floor. You will work daily with a wide variety of fragrances and scents, so it is important that you do not have fragrance allergies or significant sensitivities to strong smells. The team is small and collaborative, consisting of a few perfumers and several lab technicians, creating a close-knit environment where communication and teamwork are essential. The role requires being on your feet for most of the day and working safely and efficiently around laboratory equipment and materials within a busy, production-oriented setting.
