JOB SUMMARY

: This is technical support work performing a variety of laboratory tests on water and other substances. Work is performed under the continuing supervision of a laboratory supervisor. The employee may be expected to give guidance and assistance to less experienced employees or seasonal workers.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

: Operates a variety of laboratory equipment; records measurements and other data. Conducts a variety of tests on water in various stages of treatment to ensure that environmental standards are met; tests sludge and other treatment by-products. Prepares or assists in the preparation of reports of daily test results. Cleans, maintains, and stores equipment and instruments; washes sample containers; cleans and dusts laboratory equipment, countertops, and glassware. Collects samples; prepares reagents, standards, and test solutions used in testing process. Performs mathematical calculations based on raw laboratory data. Designs and implements computer applications for the storing and analysis of data, as needed. Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

: Work requires regular physical presence at the job site to perform job duties. Must be available to work flexible hours on a regular basis. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and instruments and the ability to use in a safe and effective manner. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to using chemicals and to perform tests on potentially hazardous substances. Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to laboratory testing. Ability to use computer applications used to compile laboratory data, maintain records and adapt records systems for computerization. Ability to perform required job duties in a safe and responsible manner. Good communication skills; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to work with minimal supervision and carry out assigned job tasks. Ability to maintain positive working relationships with the public and other employees. Ability to work effectively under time constraints and pressure.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

: High school diploma or GED required a minimum of two (2) semesters with significant course work in chemistry, biochemistry, or biology. Possession of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License and safe driving record at time of appointment.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly frequent movements from place to place. Bend, climb, kneel, twist, reach/extend arms and hands above shoulder height frequently, or otherwise move in a constantly changing environment. Lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing up to 25 pounds regularly; 30-35 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Speech recognition and clarity, including the ability to understand the speech of customers and co-workers and the ability to speak clearly so that you can be understood by customers and co-workers. Incumbent must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction.

Pay:

$20.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
