Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs moderate to high-complexity diagnostic testing to support clinical decision-making. Responsibilities include specimen processing, diagnostic testing, maintaining lab instruments, and ensuring full compliance with CLIA, COLA, and lab director expectations. The MLT also plays a key role in inventory tracking, purchasing coordination, and inspection readiness.
Key Responsibilities:
Testing and Reporting Collect, label, and process patient specimens accurately. Perform waived, moderate, and high-complexity diagnostic tests. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including Indeko analyzers and microscopes. Record and verify test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS/LIMS). Communicate critical values promptly to healthcare providers. Quality Assurance and Compliance Perform routine quality control and calibration of equipment and reagents. Complete proficiency testing as required. Follow lab safety protocols and ensure compliance with COLA, CLIA, HIPAA, and OSHA standards. Maintain accurate and legible documentation in lab books and logs. Ensure readiness for unannounced inspections by the Lab Director and accrediting bodies. Inventory and Purchasing Process Log all incoming reagents and supplies in the designated reagent logbook with date received, lot number, expiration date, and initials. Record daily usage of critical reagents in the usage log to track consumption and waste. Monitor supply levels and initiate purchase request forms when items fall below par level. Submit completed purchase requests to the Lab Supervisor for approval and forwarding to the Purchasing Department. Coordinate with staff to ensure documentation of all reagent usage is up-to-date and verifiable. Daily Documentation and Inspection Preparedness Complete daily lab book entries including equipment checks, temperatures, control results, and maintenance tasks. Participate in weekly lab audits and documentation reviews. Assist in preparing the lab for internal and external inspections. Maintain organization of SOPs, QC records, and reagent logs for immediate review.
Qualifications:
Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field. Certification (ASCP, AMT) preferred. Experience with CLIA-regulated testing environments. Proficient in
LIS/LIMS
systems, specimen handling, and equipment operation. Strong attention to detail, multitasking, and communication skills. Able to leave 25 lbs. Stand or seat for 3 hours.
Work Environment:
Clinical lab setting with biohazard exposure; PPE required. Rotating shifts or weekend availability may be required.
