This position will be divided between data entry and specimen accessioning as needed. The Data Entry role is part of a team that is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of digital and hard copy documentation corresponding with patient laboratory specimens received and processed on a daily basis. Ensure the accuracy of data entered and recognize, intercept and resolve data issues to ensure that results are delivered in a deadline-driven environment. The Specimen Accessioner role is responsible for all incoming specimens and requisitions being processed and delegated to the appropriate department for testing. Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Responsibilities):Data Entry:
- Data entry of patient demographic and testing information into laboratory information system for specimen tracking and billing purposes.
- Strict adherence to HIPAA laws.
- Ensure patient demographic information is entered to ensure timely and accurate results.
- Check for missing or questionable data; audit entries for accuracy or alert supervisor of the issue.
- Place phone calls to retrieve correct information when necessary.
- Scanning and uploading of provided paperwork to ensure accurate document control.
Specimen Accessioning:
- This is a multi-disciplinary position with three primary components: specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry.
- Assess specimen integrity and follow specimen rejection procedure. Identify and communicate any issues with supervisor/manager.
- Properly identify and catalog patient specimens, such as blood or urine samples, for review (i.e., record date of sample receipt at the top of requisition as well as Sample ID / barcode).
- Prepare laboratory specimens by type prior to laboratory analysis and testing, and route specimens by type to various staging areas.
- Assign specific computer-generated identification numbers, check for accuracy, and record all items processed.
- Data entry of patient demographic and testing information into laboratory information system for specimen tracking and billing purposes. Follow standard sequences/coding when entering data, and correct, edit, and/or verify data entered into system. Copy or scan specimen paperwork where applicable.
- Routine laboratory housekeeping tasks such as wiping down surfaces to maintain sterilization.
- Follow all universal Laboratory precautions. Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Excellent typing skills and strong attention to detail.
- Effective data entry and organizational skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and take on new tasks with varying levels of difficulty.
- Strong attention to detail; consistently produce timely and accurate results.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Associate's degree preferred.
- Medical background or experience with laboratory testing terminology or a strong aptitude to learn terminology is preferred, but not required.
- Experience in clinical laboratory setting is helpful but not required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift up to 10-30 pounds on occasion.
- Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- Monday - Friday
