JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs laboratory testing and reports accurate results used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. This position performs testing across assigned laboratory areas, including hematology, bacteriology, chemistry, and blood bank, while operating laboratory equipment according to established protocols and procedures. The MLT supports quality patient care by performing required quality control, identifying abnormal or critical results, troubleshooting routine instrument issues, and ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
DUTIES:
Performs laboratory testing in assigned areas, including hematology, bacteriology, chemistry, and blood bank, according to established procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Operates laboratory instruments and equipment, identifies potential malfunctions, performs routine troubleshooting and corrective actions, and escalates unresolved issues to appropriate personnel. Performs and documents required quality control procedures, routine instrument checks, and maintenance and takes appropriate action when results do not meet established standards. Reviews test results for accuracy and recognizes abnormal, unusual, or critical values, ensuring timely reporting and complete documentation according to departmental policies. Meets established productivity expectations by completing scheduled testing, reviewing and reconciling pending work, and assisting with monitoring departmental supply inventory. Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to accurately document, verify, and report patient results while following established computer and documentation procedures. Successfully participates in required internal and external proficiency testing and communicates pending tests, instrument concerns, and other outstanding issues during shift transitions. Works independently within established guidelines while maintaining effective communication with laboratory leadership, coworkers, and patient care staff and promoting teamwork and excellent customer service.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technician by Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board OR National Certification as Medical Laboratory Technician by
ASCP, AMT, AAB
Required
  • Associate's Degree from a NAACLS Laboratory Science Program Required
  • 1 Year of Related Experience Preferred
