Job Description

Position Summary Coastal Bend Oncology & Hematology is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented UDS Clerk / Urine Drug Screen Collection Clerk to assist with urine drug screen collections, specimen processing, patient documentation, and clerical support. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working directly with patients, handling confidential medical information, following specimen collection procedures, and maintaining accurate documentation. Previous healthcare, medical office, laboratory, specimen collection, or urine drug screening experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Greet and assist patients arriving for urine drug screening and other laboratory services. Verify patient identity using appropriate identification procedures. Explain specimen collection instructions to patients in a professional and respectful manner. Collect urine specimens according to established procedures and applicable requirements. Follow observed or unobserved collection procedures when required. Properly label specimens and verify all required patient and specimen information. Maintain accurate documentation and chain-of-custody records when applicable. Enter specimen and patient information accurately into the electronic medical record, laboratory system, or other designated system. Prepare specimens for laboratory testing and/or courier pickup. Ensure specimens are stored, packaged, and transported according to laboratory requirements. Monitor specimen supplies and notify management when supplies need to be reordered. Maintain a clean, organized, and appropriately secured collection area. Follow HIPAA privacy and confidentiality requirements at all times. Follow OSHA, infection-control, bloodborne-pathogen, and workplace safety procedures. Communicate professionally with patients, clinical staff, laboratories, and courier services. Assist with general clerical duties, filing, scanning, faxing, data entry, and other office tasks as needed. Report specimen collection problems, rejected specimens, discrepancies, or other concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to communicate professionally with patients and staff. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Basic computer and data-entry skills. Ability to follow written procedures and instructions accurately. Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a healthcare team.
Preferred:
Previous medical office, laboratory, specimen collection, or healthcare experience. Experience with urine drug screens or toxicology testing. Experience with chain-of-custody documentation. Experience working with an electronic medical record (EMR/EHR). Phlebotomy, medical assistant, laboratory, or other healthcare certification. Ability to sit and perform computer and clerical duties. Ability to bend, reach, and handle specimen containers and office supplies. Ability to perform duties while following appropriate infection-control and personal protective equipment requirements. Work Environment This position is performed in a medical office/clinical environment and involves regular interaction with patients and healthcare personnel. The employee may be exposed to urine specimens and other potentially infectious materials and must follow appropriate safety and infection-control procedures.
