WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

As the Laboratory Technician, you will perform beginning level laboratory analysis. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for accurate, neat and organized work that must be completed on a timely basis daily. The position requires a high degree of concentration and organization of details. They are required to learn to perform tasks of progressively increasing difficulty and to eventually become proficient in the performance of the tests of the various workstations. REQUIREMENTS

• An Associates degree in chemistry, biology, or related field is required; a Bachelor's degree in one of the above fields from a recognizable four-year college or university is preferred. However, any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acceptable.
• Must have good knowledge of basic principles of chemistry, biology and related laboratory sciences.
• Must have sufficient skills to perform analysis associated with main work stations including: solids, COD, nutrients, BOD, alkalinity, conductivity, pH, turbidity, bacteriology, reagent preparation, and others.
• Must be skilled in the operation and repair of basic laboratory instrumentation/equipment and be able to follow established analytical procedures (SOPs) and safety rules.
• Must be able to distinguish colors and odors associated with laboratory testing and analysis.
• Must be able to use or be able to learn how to use UOSA provided software packages, such laboratory information management system software programs and instrument specific software programs.
• Must be able to able to lift and carry 30 pounds and safely move, connect, and disconnect compressed gas cylinders using the appropriate tools and equipment. They must be able to move and carry heavy packages of liquid and dry chemicals and other laboratory supplies.
• Possession of a vehicle operator's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
