General Responsibilities:
The mission of Walla Walla Community College is to remove barriers to access, provide high-quality educational experiences, and facilitate equitable learning and success to cultivate thriving rural communities. The Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 3 (ICST 3) position provides direct support for science lab instruction by working collaboratively with science faculty and managing science laboratories. The ICST 3 coordinates instructional support services for a variety of courses within the department and provides professional/technical support requiring knowledge of a variety of scientific disciplines, which may include using a variety of electronics and digital tools.
Science Lab Management responsibilities include:
Collaborate with science faculty to determine apparatus and set up needs for pending lab sessions. Complete demonstrations and application of laboratory techniques and concepts. Anticipate and order materials, supplies and equipment to ensure that lab instruction can occur. Create and maintain an electronic record of purchases to enable quick retrieval and summary. Assist students in learning the specifics of lab equipment and materials to be used during the lab exercise, emphasizing safety and appropriate handling of lab equipment and materials. Maintain a safe, secure, well-organized and adequately stocked storage space for laboratory apparatus, glassware, instrumentation, chemicals, preserved animal tissues, and live cultures. Perform or arrange for regular preventive maintenance and repair on scientific instruments and devices including (but not limited to) microscopes, natural gas burners, centrifuges, autoclaves, water deionizers, pH meters, incubators, hot plate stirrers, electronic and mechanical balances. Explore maintenance agreements where feasible and logical. Notify facilities of maintenance and repair needs. Take the lead in developing safe laboratory standards; safe procurement, handling, storage and disposal standards of hazardous chemicals and live and preserved biological specimens; and safe laboratory environmental standards. Bring safety concerns to science faculty and supervisor. Assist science faculty and other College personnel in recruiting events within the service area. Select, hire, train and monitor student employees for work in the science labs. Ensure student employee understands and practices safety in the science labs.
Essential Functions:
Manage equipment and material inventory Assess need of each science discipline and determine best use for lab equipment and materials. Lab set up including consultation with instructional faculty, ordering, preparing, demonstrating and maintaining use of all equipment, apparatus, supplies and materials. Prioritize needs and develop a purchasing plan to ensure materials arrive on time, tracking the use of supplies and managing orders Receive and restock inventory Secure and maintain computerized chemical inventory Develop and follow laboratory procedures in conjunction with supervisor and faculty Manage lab preparation and instructional support activities Coordinate with faculty to provide appropriate preparation for laboratory instruction Complete demonstrations and application of laboratory techniques and concepts Teach portions of lab classes as needed Maintain computerized chemical inventory Prepare acids, bases, organics, and other corrosive reagents Make microbiology media and maintain stock organisms Correct, change, and/or replace materials while labs are in session Activate and/or set up Zoom rooms for instructors prior to labs Direct assigned personnel and/or supervise students Provide training for students and faculty as needed Create and maintain clean, safe, and well-organized lab spaces. Inspect, tests, and repairs equipment Maintain a safe work environment, including training and providing the appropriate PPE Implement lab hygiene protocols Maintains store room functions Inspect and test laboratory equipment for proper use and repair. Clean and maintain microscopes Lab maintenance and cleaning Dismantle labs as needed Notify the maintenance and custodial staff of facility maintenance and repair needs. General Lab Support Participate in regular meetings to outline weekly assignments and ensure standards are being met to the satisfaction of the team Effectively communicate needs and concerns as they arise. Ability to operate, maintain, and support instructional laboratories Ability to support hands-on, laboratory-based instruction and assist students in both individual and group learning environments while reinforcing safety, proper technique, and learning outcomes; ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively across multiple instructional areas, and maintain accurate inventory and preparation records; Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with faculty, supervisors, staff, and students; Ability to work independently under general supervision with completed work reviewed for effectiveness and expected results; Ability to establish constructive working relationships characterized by cooperation, professionalism, mutual respect, and recognition of cultural, ethnic, gender, and individual differences.
Required Qualifications:
Any combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills to perform the job may be considered by the college. BA in Applied Science or related field and two (2) years of science lab management experience OR Six (6) years of science lab management experience

This classified position is a full-time temporary position, not to exceed 18 months . It is in a bargaining unit for which WPEA Higher Ed is the exclusive representative. This position typically works 40 hours per week Monday-Friday. Summer schedule is typically Monday-Thursday, 10 hours/day. Occasional travel may be required to conduct business or attend training. It is typically local or regional. Work is performed almost exclusively within the laboratory setting in a higher education institution, primarily in a science laboratory, which can house working with hazardous materials, toxic, flammable and caustic chemicals and materials. Incumbent must handle live and preserved biologics. Part of this position is maintaining scales, microscopes, water filtration, ovens, hand-held monitors, digital equipment, and a variety of hand-held tools. There will be use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This position has extended periods of standing at counters. Interactions with students, staff, and faculty will be conducted in-person and electronically. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) unless declined at time of hire.
