Jail Nurse, LPN

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary:

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, performs detention health nursing activities in the jail that require a high degree of independence, complex decision making, responsibility and professional judgement.

Essential Job Functions:

Contacts generally include medical personnel, inmates and detention officers Information given and received is often of critical and confidential nature Personal contact with the public, an inmate or arrest occurs daily Physical contact to include touching, as well examining of an individual Hand to hand exchanges and face to face verbal communications between the member and the public is required on a constant basis Immediate response to medical emergencies where blood, body fluids or other medical hazards may be present Abide by agency policy to use protective equipment and clothing as this position has been determined to an extreme exposure risk to biohazards associated with blood-borne pathogens; HIV (AIDS), HBV (hepatitis B) and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis). Inoculations as required to prevent or treat biohazards

Duties and Responsibilities:

Work in generally performed in a climate-controlled office/medical exam setting or prisoner housing areas Work in occasional situations involving hazards that could result in bodily harm and/or threat life Work with and use of medical instruments Administration of drugs and care of ill or mentally impaired inmates Work in an environment of encounters with violent disturbances Integrates the Health Care Philosophy of the Detention Health Program into the delivery of services Performs survey activities to include review of medical intake history, nursing communication log, lab and compilation of statistics describing nursing and provider activities Provides routine and emergency care to inmates Sets up, orders and passes medications Maintains Medication Administration Records Administers injections, performs physical assessments and screening procedures Initiates appropriate plans of treatments, nursing intervention and/or treatment protocols based on information obtained Performs skilled nursing care and treatments according to Medical policies and procedures Assists physicians during medical examinations, transcribes and implements Doctors' orders including the ordering of medications from the pharmacy Provides health teaching, guidance and counseling to promote and maintain health Directs inmates and detention personnel in medical emergency Evaluates health care Serves as health advocate Orientation of new nurses Collects laboratory specimens; blood, urine, fecal and sputum and collects cultures as ordered Assesses for communicable disease and reports their existence to appropriate health authorities Maintains comprehensive quality records, reports and professional correspondence Responds to and answers inmate request forms Maintains supply of stock medications, reordering as necessary Changes dressing and performs special treatments and health assessments as needed Observes patient behavior and reports critical incidents Prepares transfer sheets on inmates released to other facilities Is committed to a high standard of safety laws and all Sheriff's Office policies and procedures Must be willing to report safety violations Carries administrative and supervisory responsibilities as required Targets own activities to promote the standards of Detention Health Nursing Practice Provides guidance and supervision to clerical, auxiliary and students Participates in the semi-annual T.B. screening of employees of the Sheriff's Office Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited school of Practical Nursing Two (2) years of progressively responsible work as a L.P.N. United States Citizen Arizona License as a L.P.N. Arizona Driver License Current

CPR/BCLS

Obtain certification as a CCHP (Certified Correctional Health Professional), within one (1) year of employment Pass an extensive background investigation and drug screening

Required Knowledge, Skill & Ability:

Thorough knowledge of the proper methods of interviewing and treating patients Advance knowledge of nursing and health services Advanced pharmacology
