Job Description

The Director of Staff Development (DSD) is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the facility's staff education and training programs. The DSD ensures that nursing and other designated staff receive required orientation, in-service education, competency training, and ongoing professional development consistent with facility policies, regulatory requirements, and standards of resident care. The DSD works closely with the Director of Nursing, Administrator, department managers, and interdisciplinary team to identify educational needs and promote safe, high-quality, person-centered care. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesStaff Orientation and Training Develop and coordinate orientation programs for newly hired nursing and other applicable staff. Provide facility-specific orientation regarding policies, procedures, resident rights, infection prevention, emergency procedures, and safety. Coordinate department-specific orientation and ensure new employees complete required training before working independently. Maintain orientation checklists and competency documentation. Evaluate new employees' knowledge and skills during orientation and probationary periods. In-Service Education Develop and maintain an annual staff education and in-service training calendar. Provide ongoing education based on identified staff needs, quality improvement findings, resident care issues, regulatory requirements, and changes in facility policies. Conduct or coordinate required in-service programs, including topics such as: Infection prevention and control Abuse, neglect, and exploitation prevention Resident rights Dementia and Alzheimer's care Fall prevention Skin integrity and pressure injury prevention Medication management and safety Emergency preparedness Emergency response and CPR, as applicable Safe transfers and use of mechanical lifts Documentation and charting Pain management Elopement prevention Cultural sensitivity and person-centered care Workplace safety and OSHA-related topics Document attendance, educational content, instructor information, and staff competency as required. Competency Management Develop and administer competency evaluations for nursing staff. Monitor staff performance and identify areas requiring additional training. Coordinate skills validation for applicable nursing procedures. Maintain current competency records for licensed nurses, CNAs, and other applicable staff. Provide remedial education when performance deficiencies are identified. Regulatory Compliance Monitor staff education requirements to support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Maintain accurate education and training records for survey and audit purposes. Assist the facility with preparation for regulatory surveys and inspections. Participate in developing and implementing corrective action plans related to staff education. Track mandatory annual education and required certifications. Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Participate in the facility's Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program. Review quality indicators, incident reports, audits, complaints, and survey findings to identify educational opportunities. Develop educational interventions in response to identified trends or deficiencies. Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and revise training as needed. Collaborate with department leaders to improve staff performance and resident outcomes. Documentation and Recordkeeping Maintain complete and accurate employee education files. Track orientation, annual education, competencies, certifications, and required training. Ensure education records are readily available for audits, surveys, and internal reviews. Maintain confidentiality of employee and resident information. Prepare education reports and other documentation requested by facility leadership. Leadership and Collaboration Work collaboratively with the Director of Nursing and nursing leadership. Serve as an educational resource for nurses, CNAs, and other facility personnel. Promote a positive learning environment and professional development. Participate in staff meetings, committee meetings, and interdisciplinary team activities as assigned. Assist leadership with identifying performance and education needs. Promote consistent adherence to facility policies and standards of care. QualificationsEducation Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of employment, when required by applicable regulations. Additional education in nursing education, staff development, gerontology, leadership, or a related field is preferred. Experience Previous experience in a skilled nursing, long-term care, rehabilitation, or similar healthcare setting preferred. Experience providing staff education, orientation, competency training, or clinical supervision preferred. Knowledge of long-term care regulations, nursing practices, infection prevention, and quality improvement preferred. Skills and Abilities Strong communication and presentation skills. Excellent organizational and time-management abilities. Ability to develop effective educational materials and training programs. Ability to assess staff competency and provide constructive feedback. Strong knowledge of nursing practices and resident-centered care. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency with electronic medical records and common computer applications. Ability to maintain accurate and confidential records.
