Description:
Position Overview:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Expanded Intravenous (IV) Therapy provides high-quality, direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). In addition to performing routine practical nursing duties, this position utilizes specialized training and competency in intravenous (IV) therapy to initiate, administer, and monitor IV therapy in accordance with applicable Iowa Board of Nursing administrative rules, professional standards, and facility policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Initiate, maintain, and monitor peripheral IV lines for adult patients per the Iowa Board of Nursing Expanded IV scope regulations. Prepare and administer approved IV fluid solutions and IV piggyback medications as allowed by facility guidelines and the Iowa Board of Nursing. Assess and monitor IV sites regularly for signs of complications such as infiltration, phlebitis, infection, extravasation, reporting issues to the supervising RN immediately. Perform routine nursing care such as measure and record vital signs, pain levels, and intake and output. Perform clinical assessments and procedures within the LPN scope of practice outlined by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Report any mental or physical condition changes to the supervising RN and/or health care provider. Administer non-IV medications according to medication administration policy and procedures. Document all nursing interventions, assessments, IV therapy administrations, medication administrations, patient responses, and observations accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Assist the supervising RN with ongoing patient evaluations and patient/family discharge education. Receive orders from healthcare providers and ensure orders are carried out accurately and timely. Assists in inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment. Assists in maintenance of safe, clean work environment. Assists with the general operation of the Medical / Surgical Department. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. Experience Required:
Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program. Completion of an Iowa-approved LPN IV therapy course.

Licensure/Certification Required Active, unencumbered LPN license of the State of Iowa (or a valid Compact/NLC license with Iowa privileges) Current certification in Expanded IV Therapy authorized under Iowa Board of Nursing regulations Basic Life Support Advanced Cardiac Life Support within 6 months of hire Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 6 months of hire

Environmental Factors:
May be exposed to communicable diseases due to working in a health care environment. Works in a well-illuminated climate-controlled environment. May come in contact with blood and other body fluids.
