A Licensed Practical Nurse or Vocational Nurse provides basic medical care under the direction of registered nurses and other healthcare specialists. The tasks that they are permitted to perform vary by state, but usually include changing bandages, checking blood pressure, or helping feed patients. May work in hospitals, nursing homes, or other healthcare facilities.

PRIMARY FUNCTION
Performing nursing care is essential to the assessment, promotion, maintenance and restoration of patient's health and wellness.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list may not include all the duties that may be assigned. 1) Ensure rooms and instruments are clean for patient use. 2) Perform necessary vitals on patient. 3) Ensure that the patient's history is complete i.e. (immunization records, allergy to medications, birth weight etc.). 4) Obtain a summary of patient complaints. Document any immunizations needed. Read previous visits to obtain a follow-up plan as needed. 5) Assist doctors in any necessary procedures. 6) Make patient and prescription calls as needed. 7) Perform sensory screening as needed. 8) Fill out any necessary paperwork for patients i.e. (school forms, medication forms). 9) Call hospitals to obtain any necessary results i.e. (lab and x-ray results). 10) Contact insurance companies to obtain the necessary authorization for certain procedures. 11) Complete any necessary referrals and referral cover sheets for doctor approval. 12) Set up any home therapies for patient use. 13) Teach patients when necessary. i.e. (breathing treatments, newborn care, etc.). 14) Keep a clean, safe, and organized work environment for patients and staff. 15) Attend any necessary meetings to become up to date on changes in protocol and procedures. 16) Work as a team with nursing and front office staff for optimal patient care. 17) Assist the doctor in emergency situations. 18) Keep expiration dates current on all sample medications and formulas. 19) Keep medications and supplies on the crash cart current. 20) Administer immunizations and medicine injections. 21) Follow any OSHA and Safety requirements for rooms and documentation. 22) Other various duties as assigned, including cross training in other functional areas.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION
High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate from an accredited practical/technical school of nursing.
LICENSURE
LPN and Active CPR certification required.
EXPERIENCE
One year's work experience in a medical office setting preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to perform necessary vital signs for pediatrics and obtain patient histories. Knowledge of basic medical terminology, and immunization requirements for children. Ability to assess emergency situations and act accordingly. Maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public. Knowledge of computer desired
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Patient-facing May rotate working in the office and remote/telework. This job must be U.S. based. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common to an office environment.
