Job Description
Martin De Porres School for Exceptional Children (MDP) is a 501c3 not for profit organization that has been serving youth for over 50 years. We run an Elementary/Middle School, High School and a residential program with a work force of approximately 160 dedicated people. The Residential Nurse will support The Martin De Porres School Residential Program for Exceptional Children by adhering to our mission (To educate children experiencing emotional and behavioral problems) our vision (Through education, every child entrusted to our care will have the opportunity to reach his or her fullest potential) and our core value of respect, integrity, leadership and service.
SALARY DEPENDENT ON CERTIFICATION LEVEL GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Residential Nurse is responsible for ensuring that, while in attendance at the residence, the routine health and safety of our students is protected and maintained. The Residential Nurse will also insure that all staff are informed and trained in appropriate ways to insure their own health and safety as they come in contact with our students. The School Nurse will insure that all NY State and NYC Health requirements are met by staff and students as to medical exams, medical clearance, medication management, medication storage and immunization documentation.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Screen and evaluate findings of deficits in our students in the areas of vision, hearing teeth, scoliosis, growth, weight management, on a regular basis. Maintain accurate and current information on student medical alerts and inform appropriate staff especially as new students are enrolled. Supervise procedures for students taking medication. Manage medication supply for each student and provide for appropriate daily administration of medication. Maintain contact with prescribing doctors and with parents / guardians to insure correct prescriptions are followed. Review and maintain accurate and current health records in accordance with local governmental regulations. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through prevention, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases to the appropriate local health authority. Assist in the formulation of health policies, goals and objectives for our program. Assist in the development of the school's Exposure Control Plan to comply with OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standard. Provide awareness training to staff and students in universal precautions to be used and implemented across our community. Insure that protective first aid equipment is available in all program areas. Maintain appropriate written data covering all medical needs and services provided to our students. Provide a daily nursing log of students seen for any medical reason. Provide health education assistance and training in coordination with the regular counseling services of our program. Teach parenting skills as they relate to adolescent development and health needs. Provide direct health education and counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and life style issues that may affect health. Counsel our adolescents concerning problems such as school-age pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, AIDS, smoking, and drug and/or alcohol abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making. Develop procedures and provide for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbance. Assist with first aid procedures for medical emergencies in the residence. Ensure staff have access to health supplies needed for routine mishaps. Assist in assessing potential abuse and neglect issues. Contribute to IEP development where medical issues, alerts are involved. Assist related services staff in home visits where medical issues are a major issue or concern. Assist students with personal hygiene concerns. Ensure that the appropriate safeguards are provided when speaking or writing about student and/or staff medical issues, treatment, diagnosis. Assist in the intake screening process where medical concerns are raised or evident. And all other duties as assigned by the Martin De Porres School administration.QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN), NYS License. Demonstrated ability to develop a positive, therapeutic relationship with students with special needs. Willingness to work with special needs students with challenging, sometimes aggressive behaviors. Demonstrated leadership & supervisory skills; psyche, school, or teaching hospital experience preferred. Demonstrated communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrated ability to understand and ensure NYS and NYC Department of Health regulation compliance. Demonstrated ability to work with Consulting Psychiatrist. Demonstrated ability to work with Social Service, Education, and Residential Staff. Demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance, professional development activities and training to staff in areas of health and safety. Demonstrated ability to provide routine first aid training to adults and adolescents. Demonstrated ability to provide the level of written data and documentation needed to support the medical services available at our school. Demonstrated ability to keep current on any Department of Health regulations. Evening, weekend, and holiday availability.
