School Nurse - Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) K-12 Building
QUALIFICATIONS
Current/Valid Ohio Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license BCI/FBI Background Clearances Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program Current CPR and First Aid certification. Demonstrated ability to work with school-aged children. Ability to meet all Ohio criminal background check requirements. Valid Ohio driver's license Ability to perform essential physical functions of the position.

Full-Time Position Summary The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides health services to students under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), licensed physician, or other authorized healthcare provider in accordance with Ohio law. The LPN assists in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment by providing direct nursing care, administering medications and treatments, responding to student health needs, maintaining accurate health records, and collaborating with school staff, families, and healthcare providers to support student success. ________________________________________ Essential Duties and Responsibilities Student Health Services Provide direct nursing care to students within the Ohio LPN scope of practice. The administrator prescribed medications and treatments according to physician orders and district policy. Perform first aid and emergency care for illness and injury. Monitor students with chronic health conditions including diabetes, asthma, seizure disorders, allergies, and other medical needs. Assist with specialized medical procedures as authorized by physician orders and within the LPN scope of practice. Monitor and document student health status and report concerns to the supervising RN and/or administrator. Assist with health screenings as directed. Health Records and Compliance Maintain confidential student health records in accordance with
FERPA, HIPAA
(when applicable), and district policy. Document medications, treatments, incidents, and student visits accurately. Assist in maintaining immunization and medical records. Prepare required reports and documentation. Collaboration Work collaboratively with the Registered Nurse, administrators, teachers, counselors, parents, physicians, and community agencies. Communicate health concerns affecting student learning and attendance. Participate in student intervention and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as appropriate. Assist in implementing student health care plans. School Safety Respond appropriately to medical emergencies. Assist with emergency preparedness planning. Maintain emergency medical supplies and equipment. Assist in monitoring communicable diseases and implementing infection-control procedures. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain medication inventory and documentation. Ensure compliance with Board policies and Ohio Department of Education and Workforce requirements. Attend required professional development and district meetings. Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent, Principal, or Supervising Registered Nurse. ________________________________________ Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The successful candidate shall demonstrate: Knowledge of pediatric and adolescent health care. Knowledge of communicable disease prevention. Ability to respond effectively during emergencies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills. Ability to work effectively with students, parents, staff, physicians, and community agencies. Ability to use technology for documentation and communication. ________________________________________ Minimum Qualifications Applicants must possess: Current, valid Ohio Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license. Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program. Current CPR and First Aid certification. Demonstrated ability to work with school-aged children. Ability to meet all Ohio criminal background check requirements. Valid Ohio driver's license (preferred if travel between buildings is required). Ability to perform essential physical functions of the position. ________________________________________ Preferred Qualifications It is preferred that candidates have the following qualifications: Previous experience in school nursing, pediatrics, family practice, or public health. Experience with students receiving special education services. Knowledge of Section 504 Plans, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs). Training in diabetes management, seizure care, EpiPen administration, tube feedings, catheterization, and other specialized procedures. Experience using electronic health records. ________________________________________ Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Lift and assist students as necessary. Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and reach throughout the workday. Respond quickly to emergencies. Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. ________________________________________ Working Conditions School environment with exposure to communicable diseases and occasional bodily fluids. Frequent interaction with students, staff, parents, and healthcare providers. Occasional evening or after-school activities may be required. ________________________________________ Licensure Requirements The successful candidate shall: Maintain an active Ohio Licensed Practical Nurse license. Practice within the scope established by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Maintain all required continuing education for license renewal. Successfully complete all district-required training, including safety, bloodborne pathogens, emergency response, and other mandated professional development.
