Position Summary The Hospice Medical Director is responsible for providing medical leadership and oversight for the hospice program. The Medical Director collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure quality patient care, regulatory compliance, symptom management, and physician support while promoting excellence in hospice and palliative care. The Medical Director Designee performs these responsibilities in the absence of the Medical Director. Responsibilities Provide medical direction and oversight for hospice patient care. Review and certify hospice eligibility and terminal illness. Perform or oversee face-to-face encounters for applicable hospice benefit periods. Collaborate with attending physicians and the interdisciplinary team to develop and review patient care plans. Provide consultation on pain and symptom management. Participate in Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings and Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities. Serve as a clinical resource and educator for physicians, nurses, and hospice staff. Ensure compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation, California regulations, and accreditation standards. Promote quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based hospice practices. Represent the hospice within the healthcare community and support referral development. Minimum Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) licensed in the State of California without restrictions. Current DEA registration and controlled substance authority. Minimum of two (2) years of physician leadership or supervisory experience in hospice, palliative care, or a related healthcare setting is required. Experience in hospice or palliative care and/or formal training in end-of-life care. Current knowledge of Medicare hospice regulations and certification requirements. Strong leadership, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills. Eligible to participate in the Medicare program (not excluded). Preferred Qualifications Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Previous experience serving as a Hospice Medical Director. Experience with hospice electronic medical record (EMR) systems. Knowledge of ACHC, Joint Commission, or other hospice accreditation standards.
