A Medical Director directs and manages a medical practice, clinic, lab or public health program. Organizes and manages of staff physicians, policy implementation, and ensures that standards for medical care are communicated and maintained.

$140 - $145 hour Position Overview The Part-Time Psychiatry Associate Medical Director will evaluate medical services and treatment plans to ensure they are medically necessary, cost-effective, and aligned with established clinical guidelines and health plan policies. Working on behalf of healthcare organizations or insurance providers, they review patient charts and authorization requests, conduct peer-to-peer discussions with attending physicians, and determine appropriate levels of care. Through these evaluations, Utilization Reviewers help maintain high standards of patient care while preventing unnecessary healthcare costs and optimizing resource allocation.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Reviews & Appeals:
Conduct peer-to-peer clinical reviews and appeal case reviews with attending physicians to discuss level-of-care and medical necessity determinations. Perform limited chart reviews for retrospective reviews or second-level appeals.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Participate in meetings with regional healthcare providers, clinics, hospitals, and community care systems across rural Connecticut.
Data & Quality Strategy:
Collaborate with internal departments to analyze healthcare utilization trends, interpret clinical data, design reports, and develop actionable improvement strategies.
Operations & Policy Advisory:
Support clinicians with timely service authorizations. Assist in evaluating clinical criteria, medical technology assessments, quality improvement (QI) initiatives, and provider credentialing. Interpret existing medical policies and serve as an internal clinical consultant.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
MD or DO degree.
Board Certification:
Board certified in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Licensure & Location:
Active, unrestricted medical license to practice in Connecticut. Must reside within Connecticut and conduct all utilization/appeal reviews while physically located in a US state or territory (excluding military bases, vessels, or embassies).
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications Clinical experience in addiction psychiatry or treatment of substance use disorders (certification by ABPN, ASAM, or ABAM is a plus). Formal training in epidemiology, public health, or data science. Core Competencies Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
