Section Chief of Proceduraland Surgical Care NiazeeCollege of Osteopathic Medicine (NCOM) seeks aphysician-educator and experienced academicleader to serve as Section Chief of Procedural and Surgical Care . TheSection Chief isco-equal with the Section Chiefs of Community Health andPrimary Care, Specialty Care, and OPP under the Chair of Clinical Sciences. Therole provides four-year curricular engagement, with primary emphasis in OMS 1-2and continued discipline-level integration, oversight,outcomes review, andquality improvement during OMS 3-4. Curriculum decisions and recommendationsare advanced through NCOM's approvedcurriculum-governance processes. Thepermanent portfolio includes general surgery and surgical subspecialties;obstetrics andgynecology; anesthesiology and perioperative medicine; traumaand acute surgical care; and longitudinal procedural and operative-skillseducation. The Section Chief leads through discipline-specific faculty and isnot expected to serve as the sole content expert for everydiscipline.

Interventional radiology and the medical specialty portfolio remain underSpecialty Care, with collaboration on shared content. Unlessseparately assigned, affiliation agreements, clinical-site contracting, studentplacement, scheduling, and day-to-dayclerkship administration remain with theOffice of Clinical Education. You'll be part of a founding team shaping the future of osteopathic medicaleducation, where your voice,expertise, and leadership directly influenceinstitutional growth and student success. To succeed as the Section Chief ofProceduraland Surgical Care, you should have: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or Doctor of Medicine (MD)degree. A DO degree is preferred; an MD candidate must demonstrate commitment to osteopathic medical education, whole-person care, andappropriate integration of osteopathic principles. Active, unrestricted medical license. Eligibility for Illinois medicallicensure is required, and Illinois licensure must be obtained and maintained before any assigned duties for which it is required. Active AOA or ABMS board certification in general surgery, an AOA- or ABMS-recognized surgical specialty, obstetrics and gynecology, oranesthesiology. Proven experience teaching medical students and proven academic leadership experience in a medical educationsetting. Minimum of five years of substantive, independent clinical practice after completion of residency and any applicablefellowship. Academic, teaching, and administrative responsibilities may be concurrent with, but do not substitute for, theclinical-practice requirement. Minimum of three years of academic or structured medical-education teaching experience aftercompletion of training. Delivery of standardized certification courses alone does not satisfy this requirement. At least oneyear of substantive leadership responsibility with accountability for personnel, operations, resources, safety, organizationalperformance, or change management. This experience may have been obtained within or outside academic medicine but does not replace therequired academic-leadership experience. Demonstrated experience with curriculum design and mapping, learner assessment, facultydevelopment, accreditation support, educational data review, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement. Demonstratedability to lead across disciplines, delegate to subject-matter experts, manage competing priorities, resolve conflict, and build reliablesystems in a complex organization. Ability to qualify for an appropriate faculty appointment at NCOM.

PreferredQualifications:

Prior service as a department chair, section chief, course director, clerkship director, programdirector, simulation leader, or comparable academic-administrative leader. Experience teaching osteopathic medical students andintegrating osteopathic principles into surgical, obstetric, anesthesiology, perioperative, or procedural education. Experienceleading general surgery or obstetrics and gynecology clerkships, distributed clinical education, community-based preceptors, or multi-siteassessment and comparability processes. Formal training, certification, or scholarship in health professions education, surgicaleducation, simulation, quality improvement, patient safety, program evaluation, or educational leadership. Experience withintegrated, systems-based, case-based, problem-based, team-based, flipped-classroom, simulation, or other active-learning curricula. Your responsibilities as the Section Chief of Proceduraland Surgical Care will include: Leaddevelopment, integration, mapping, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of the four-year Procedural and Surgical Carecurriculum, with primary operational emphasis in OMS 1-2 and continued discipline-level oversight and quality review in OMS 3-4, subject tothe authority of the Curriculum Committee or equivalent approved body. Coordinate discipline leads, faculty, adjunct faculty,preceptors, and specialty advisors across general surgery, surgical subspecialties, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology,perioperative medicine, trauma and acute surgical care, and procedural-skills education. Provide discipline-level leadership forpreparation for and oversight of the general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology core clinical rotations in partnership with the Officeof Clinical Education and designated clerkship directors. Review rotation objectives, syllabi, required encounters andprocedures, student roles, supervision expectations, assessments, grading practices, remediation processes, and educational outcomes. Participate with the Office of Clinical Education and institutional assessment leadership in review of clinical-site capacity,faculty and preceptor qualifications, student supervision, assessment quality, site-level outcomes, and educational comparability acrosssites. Direct a developmentally sequenced procedural-skills framework spanning OMS 1-4, including sterile technique, surgicalsafety and time-out, knot tying, suturing, wound care, local-anesthesia principles, tubes and drains, vascular-access concepts, urinaryand enteral access, airway fundamentals, and image-guided procedure principles as approved within the curriculum. Coordinateuse of simulation, task trainers, standardized patients, ultrasound/POCUS, anatomy laboratories, and supervised clinical experiences, withdefined competency thresholds, remediation pathways, safety procedures, and faculty-to-learner ratios. Ensure longitudinalcoverage of preoperative assessment, perioperative risk and medication management, airway and anesthesia principles, antimicrobial andvenous-thromboembolism prophylaxis, fluid and blood management, multimodal pain care, postoperative monitoring, and recognition ofcomplications. Integrate osteopathic principles and practice, whole-person care, and clinically appropriate OPP/OMM applicationsin coordination with OPP/OMM leadership. Promote recruitment, retention, mentoring, development, institutional appointment, andsuccession planning for qualified faculty, adjunct faculty, discipline leads, clinical preceptors, and interprofessional educators. Ensure assessment-driven faculty and preceptor development in clinical teaching, learner supervision, feedback, procedural assessment,remediation, patient safety, operating-room learning climate, interprofessional teamwork, and simulation-based education. Reviewcourse, clerkship, faculty, site, assessment, licensure, and program-outcome data, including confidential student evaluations asappropriately shared, and recommend and document CQI actions supporting clinical performance, licensure readiness, and transition tograduate medical education. Participate in student assessment, remediation, and grade-recommendation processes only throughformally approved institutional procedures and conflict-of-interest safeguards. Advise students regarding surgical, obstetric,anesthesiology, and procedural career pathways and residency preparation; participate in scholarship, strategic planning, resourcestewardship, accreditation preparation, succession planning, and committee service appropriate to the role.
